Recent Chester guest reviews

This was a great house for our Lassen Volcanic National Park trip. Midway between the east and main entrances for easy access to both. The home is in excellent condition and well stocked. Highly recommended

My son and I had a wonderful time at this property. It was priced amazingly and gave us the necessary flexibility for our vacation. We were in town to hike Lassen. While we had a little drive every morning into the park, it was WELL worth it to have such a nice place to stay. We enjoyed having our own room (unlike in a hotel) and the kitchen was well stocked with basics (ziploc bags, plastic wrap, and SPICES!!). There was much more room than we needed. The loft area was very nice and since it was up a set of stairs, still very private.

Things to do in Chester

Build your itinerary around Lake Almanor, then mix in local history, a meadow walk, or a round of golf. These stops give families, couples, and groups several ways to enjoy the area without turning every day into a long drive.

Lake Almanor

Lake Almanor is the area's main outdoor draw, with opportunities for boating, fishing, paddling, swimming, birding, and time along the shore. Access points and services vary around the lake, so it works best for travelers who plan their preferred activity before heading out.

Best for:

The Olsen Barn

The Olsen Barn sits on protected meadowland at the eastern edge of Chester and offers a quiet setting for walking, picnicking, birding, and photography. It is an easy fit for travelers who want a low-key outdoor stop close to town.

Best for:

Collins Pine Museum

Collins Pine Museum explores the area's logging and forestry history through exhibits housed in a timber-frame building modeled after the former sawmill. The outdoor equipment display makes this a useful cultural stop for families and history-minded travelers.

Best for:

Chester-Lake Almanor Museum

The Chester-Lake Almanor Museum preserves stories and objects tied to the Almanor Basin, including Maidu culture, early settlement, ranching, and the creation of Lake Almanor. It is a compact stop for travelers who want context for the landscape and communities around them.

Bailey Creek Golf Course

Bailey Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole public course in the Lake Almanor basin near Chester. Golfers can make it the focus of a morning or afternoon while the rest of the group explores the lake or town.

Chester local tips

Day trips from Chester

Chester is a practical base for exploring the Lassen region, but the park deserves its own itinerary. Leave enough time for stops, short walks, and changing road or trail conditions.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park makes a strong full-day outing from Chester, with volcanic landscapes, hydrothermal areas, alpine lakes, hiking, and a scenic park highway. Access changes with snow and seasonal conditions, so review current National Park Service alerts before setting out.
