Cozy Mendocino cottage with gorgeous views & relaxing, quiet atmosphere

While you may not run into the mysterious Strider at this cozy Mendocino vacation rental, when you stay at The Prancing Pony (the name is a Lord of the Rings reference), you'll be surrounded by an enchanting Northern California forest—20 secluded, forested acres to be precise. From the raised deck to the inviting bedrooms, this wooded cottage will fulfill your vacation fantasy.

Just three miles away is the village of Mendocino (and the ocean) where you can grab a pint at Patterson's Pub or pick up a freshly made deli sandwich at Mendocino Market. Take your snack to refuel during a hike through Mendocino Headlands State Park, just northwest of the village and less than four miles from the home.

Have up to four more people who want to join your fellowship? Rent Bag End, the main house on this property, along with this cottage. Both homes are magnificently decorated, cozy, and surrounded by beauty.

With room for four, chances are that you'll spend a lot of your personal time off relaxing at this Mendocino getaway. If you're driving up from the Bay Area, pick up a bottle of pinot noir from a Sonoma Coast winery to enjoy on this home's sprawling deck. The lush trees and ferns hugging the property will allow you to live in the moment.

Inside is a colorful family room where you can truly unwind and unplug. With no TV or WiFi, you'll let go of the everyday and enjoy the company of your family and friends. Get lost in a novel from the home's library and, on chilly nights, heat up the pellet stove and play a board game from the home's collection around the four-seat dining table.

The fully stocked kitchen will inspire you to stay in and cook favorites for every meal (even elevensies). Bring your coarsely ground Blue Bottle roast to make a fine cup of coffee with the provided French press. You can enjoy it under the morning sunshine out on the deck.

After a day of beachcombing, you'll want to curl up in a comfy bed. On the main floor you'll find one of the bedrooms (with a queen-size bed) and the bathroom with a walk-in shower. Through this master bedroom is access to the loft upstairs, which holds a spacious futon.

Pack lightly, because there's also a private washer and dryer in this home, and as an extra bonus, there's also a car charging area between both homes on the property. The property includes a standard NEMA 14-50 exterior mounted 240 volt outlet for use with electric car chargers. Make sure to bring your charging cable or portable charging unit.

If you're coming from the Bay Area, why not take a leisurely drive up Highway 1 to visit the charming seaside stops of Bodega Bay, Gualala, Elk, and Albion along the way? Fill up on their local fare and stretch your legs on their pleasant beaches during your mini road trip.

Once here, 12 miles north of Mendocino is its biggest town, Fort Bragg, for shopping dining, and a funky laid back vibe.

Closer to home, search for a whole sand dollar on Big River Beach, a 7,400 acre wildlife corridor in the Mendocino Headlands State Park. For an afternoon paddling on Big River itself, rent a kayak. Still, there's nothing like holding hands with your honey while watching the Pacific crash onto and carve out the rocky coast.

Your time off is precious, so spend it in a place that allows you to get away from it all. This Northern California Coast vacation rental will definitely inspire!

Very nice little house hidden in the forest. Quiet and comfy :-)
The only criticism we have is about the cleanliness: some of the kitchen pans and shelves are not clean and we found lots of dust under one of the chairs in the living room.
Also, one of the burners on the gaz stove was not working.
I think it would be nice to check everything once in a while and allow for a complete cleanup.
Other than that it is a very nice little getaway.
Manager response:
Thank you for your review, Noelle. This home has been scheduled for a deep clean, and all the carpets have been professionally steam cleaned. The property manager is looking into repairs for the stove top burner. We hope to see you again!

We stayed at this property when there was a PG&E blackout. The water system is on a pump. There was no water or power. Avoid this property if you are planning to attend during any period when there might be a blackout. We suggest they install an emergency generator and a water tank that can service the house should the water pump not work. Otherwise house is fine.
Manager response:
Hi Hugh, thank you for your feedback. We're glad that we were able to compensate you for the issues related to the power outage. We hope to host you again for a more enjoyable stay.
Dawn L. Aug 2019
This was very cozy, private, and removed from the main area of Mendocino. Best part was the children's room. We had a hard time getting the kid to go see the sights.
Tracey G. Aug 2019
Excellent place to stay with the family. Hope to be back for a longer stay.
Terry K. May 2019
The quiet, the cleanliness and thoughtfulness of the hosts. A perfect getaway.
Susan S. May 2019
This was a perfect spot for a weekend getaway. It was so quiet and private, and the house was nicely furnished and very comfortable.
Azura A. Mar 2019
Very well maintained cabin with great Craftsmanship. Our family really enjoyed our stay here. Up stairs sleeping is only accessable through other bedroom, which is kinda awkward. The surrounding woods are gorgeous.

the pony exceeded expectations

The Prancing Pony was perfect for a 'get away from it all' holiday. Located in wonderful, still forest the house itself was a lovely surprise. Modern inside, clean and with everything we needed to have a very enjoyable stay. My 2yo son especially liked the toys in the top bedroom. It was wonderful waking up in the forest and fresh air. Mendocino center is only a short drive away with excellent shops and cafes. We can also recommend Stanford Inn restaurant for excellent food. I would stay at the Prancing Pony again and can highly recommend it

We loved the place, so secluded & peaceful - not to mention the fruit growing in the garden -
Dusty H. Jul 2018
We loved the provacy and the peacefulness.
Trina J. Jul 2018
The location was simply perfect and worked out well for my family to unplug and enjoy family time with one another.

What a charming cabin nestled in the redwoods that had everything we needed for our stay. Explored the property and enjoyed the beauty that surrounded the cabin. It was a very relaxing stay and we enjoyed that there was no TV or internet. We will definitely be booking again!
Michelle M. May 2018
We loved our stay at The Prancing Pony. Being located in the woods with no WIFI or cable/TV allowed us to disconnect for a few days from our busy lives and enjoy being together as a family. It's proximity to Downtown Mendocino is a huge plus! This cozy cabin is good for families with 2-3 kids. The bathroom is small with a tiny shower so this is not the place for you if you are into luxurious baths. Nice collection of books and games for the kids.

Fully equipped kitchen, very private, very quiet. 5-10 minute drive to town
Beth H. Apr 2018
Great place to tune out from society. Great place to tune in with the family. Incredible Mt.biking nearby. Close to the coast and town, while still secluded in the trees. Already talking about a return visit!!
John S. Feb 2018
This place is just as advertised – in a beautiful setting, SO close to town. You transport from a dense magical little forest to a rocky coastline, staring at the Pacific in about 10 minutes.

We love to cook while we're on vacation in a home and the kitchen was the most well-stocked that I've ever been in for a situation like this. There was even the essentials like oil, flour, salt pepper, sugar and a variety of other spices that you hate to bring or buy.

The rooms are a bit chilly in the winter time, but it's fine because the gas stove heats the little haven quickly and efficiently.

I've already told a lot of friends about The Prancing Pony and can't wait to plan my return :)

We spent a few days at Christmas, very nice to be secluded in the woods and still just minutes from town and State Parks.
Tracy C. Nov 2017
The house is very comfortable, cleaning , quite sitting in the redwood forest. I love to stay there again.
Stuart J. Nov 2017
Beautiful cottage among the redwoods. Very nice appointments and comfortable furnishings. Very comfortable king-size bed. Temperature slow to respond to changes on the thermostat, particularly initially, since the system was turned off when we arrived.
Karl-Heinz V. Aug 2017
A charming cabin in the woods with all facilities you might need for your vacation. Very clean and well equipped for a succesful stay in Mendocino.
Walter D. Aug 2017
The cabin was amazing. Tina of places to explore and the garden was amazing! Would highly recommend this private and scenic escape.I
Lori G. Jul 2017
We stayed two nights at The Prancing Pony. Our 10 year old son and 15 year old daughter loved having access to the garden berries and discovering banana slugs. The property was breathtakingly beautiful. It was a nice change of pace to not have internet access. We were so happy to have found this place and will rent here again, but for more than 2 nights! The house is sweet, minimally decorated and cozy- giving the mind, body and soul a break! Although the discovery of the very tiny freezer lead to dessert before dinner and the cleaning fee is more than other larger vacation rentals, The Prancing Pony holds a special place for our family now.
Janel T. Jul 2017
Beautiful and cozy private cabin in the woods with private small hiking trails and an enchanted garden. We had a wonderful stay, and our two young boys had a fantastic time "camping" for the first time. They loved exploring and picking fruit in the beautiful garden and roasting marshmallows around the campfire in the clearing by the house. The also loved the loft area which came equipped with little toys and books, perfect for little kids. The lack of cell service and internet was actually refreshing. I can't remember the last time I truly "disconnect". All in all a great trip. We will be back!
Eric Y. Jun 2017
My wife and I very much enjoyed our stay here. The home was in immaculate condition when we arrived. It's tucked away and hidden from the rest of the world. We really felt like we were able to get away and relax. There is another house on the property but we never saw it or anybody staying there; there are plenty of trees and the two buildings are far enough apart. We enjoyed walking through the cute garden near the house. Our one complaint was the lack of curtains or blinds on any of the windows, although we with the privacy of the property we never thought anyone was really looking in.
Wyatt M. Apr 2017
Great location! Loved the quietness.
Max G. Mar 2017
This place was both quaint and well-appointed. It has everything you need. The lack of wifi and its location nestled among redwoods made this stay feel like a real getaway. Despite only staying two nights, we all came back to reality feeling renewed and refreshed from the weekend.
Dana T. Feb 2017
Wonderful spot and as advertised. Really feel like you are AWAY. Couple of tips: We DID have a bit of cell coverage; wasn't critical but a nice to have given we were chasing weather forecasts. Also, when I looked at the web site, I came away with the impression that the loft had TWO beds. In fact, it has ONE and a third bed is the pull out couch in the living room. Just a good FYI. And yes, as one reviewer noted, the loft access is through the bedroom; fine for our intimate family but probably not perfect for everyone.
Micheline L. Nov 2016
Our family of four loved this sweet house nestled in the redwoods. There are some unique aspects to this property, and it was very comfortable and cozy. There's plenty of privacy and forest to explore. There's even a bonus bathroom in a cute structure outside. A great place to unplug with no TV or Wifi. We'd come back and thought it would be fun to rent the bigger house on the property as well with a larger group.
Stephen W. Nov 2016
Very clean and accommodating! The trails were fun and the property was well supplied with essentials. A good and reclusive getaway!
Brian P. Sep 2016
My family of four had a great time relaxing and getting away from our daily routine in the cabin. We were able to unplug and relax playing games and reading. We had a great weekend. Thanks!
Carrie E. Aug 2016
Beautiful tranquil spot for my sweetie and I to relax and restore. Blueberries and apples in the garden, redwoods out the front door. Electric woodstove. Thank you.
Suzanne F. Aug 2016
I loved that this house showed the owners' personality, and wasn't a typical bland vacation rental. My kids were decidedly not fans of the lack of wifi/cell service/tv, but they got over it, and they loved the loft! They both also enjoyed the woods near the house, the garden, and the extra half bathroom outside.
Joseph B. Jul 2016
We had a very nice stay here. It's a perfect location to relax and stay unplugged from the internet and TV. We will definitely try to return to the Prancing Pony or the other property if we a bigger party.
Mark F. Jun 2016
Early on we read a review from a previous tenant that said this was the perfect place for children. Were they right! Our kids (2&4) had a ball. When we were out and about they kept asking to go back to the Pony! It was such an incredibly relaxing cottage. We all slept like babies and had a fabulous time. Just wished we tacked on another day! Only downfall, not that there is one with this place, was there was no BBQ. We had some fresh fish we wanted grill.

Prancing Pony, we miss you. We will be back! Thank you.
Arjanna V. May 2016
If you are looking for a quiet getaway this is the place to go!
Ronald Y. May 2016
We had a wonderful time here, and would highly recommend it to others. The one piece of insider information that I think is important to pass along is that although it works well for families because there are two bedrooms, it is not ideal if the goal of having two rooms is to allow privacy for the adults on the vacation. The top bedroom includes a hinged window that, when opened, literally looks down upon the bed below, which was a bit horrifying when my teenager peaked her head down to say "HELLOOOOO!" If the adults take the room upstairs, they have to walk through the downstairs bedroom to get to the bathroom, and my teen kept pointing out that she could hear our conversations. So, with that caveat in mind, this was a wonderful vacation.
Mary D. Apr 2016
We had a delightful stay at this cute house in the forest. The place was comfortable and clean. Looking at the stars in the evening was magical and a real treat for us city people. We would definitely return for another stay.
Aliza L. Apr 2016
a wonderful vacation! the house was very comfortable and had lots of great toys and games for our kids- ones that we actually want to go out and get! very quiet area and close to town. we love walking around the town of medocino, out on the beautiful cliffs and down to the beaches- it's one of our favorite places in the world!
Billi A. Feb 2016
We had an enjoyable stay. The main bed downstairs is so comfortable we were well rested. There is a CD player so bring some music as there is no Internet. A working, clean kitchen was were we spent a lot of time cooking. Great window views of the amazing redwoods surrounding the cabin. The staff was very helpful!
Ann R. Jan 2016
If you want a nice, modern, attractive place in the woods, the Prancing Pony is it. There are 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, but one bedroom is upstairs with a low ceiling so it's best for one couple, or a family with a couple of kids that aren't too old but old enough to go up stairs and be alone up there. The lack of communication devices suited me just fine. There are redwoods outside all the windows. And the town of Mendocino is only 3 miles away. I loved my quiet stay at the Prancing Pony.
Isabel N. Jan 2016
We loved this cottage, it was perfect for us. Secluded, quiet, pretty, and very clear. Perfect for a weekend getaway for a couple.
Suresh K. Dec 2015
Very close to nature. Initially, we were a bit uncomfortable to book a place where there is no TV, internet.. not even mobile signals. But, it was awesome experience to spend 2 nights at this place. Perfect family (or friends) vacation option. The house is perfect for a small family. Kids enjoy a lot with the games collection...
Overall, we had wonderful time.
Galina Z. Dec 2015
Everything was fine, our stay was enjoyable.
The only thing that we would love to change is the time you are allowed to enter the property. 4p.m., especially at winter time, when it's getting dark early, is too late. The navigator in the area shows different location, so your driving instructions need to be more clear. Otherwise, everything is great and we will recommend this property to our friends.
Mattthew S. Nov 2015
Very quiet, peaceful and beautiful location close to town, beautiful trails, and surf spots. Ideal for a family, romantic, friends, or personal retreat vacation!
Idyllic spot!
Nahom D. Oct 2015
Amazing place, clean and private .... It felt like a home than anything else and the small details about the interior, furnitures and appliances made the experience very positive. Love the garden and being able to take a morning stroll privately. We are bound to return to this home away from home.
Martina D. Oct 2015
We stayed at the Prancing Pony with our two young children (4 and 6) for 2 nights. It wasn't long enough! We had hikes and beach outings planned and all my children asked was to stay at the property. It was the best stocked vacation house we ever had. Starting from very high quality children books, a whole box of figurines and horses to little sand toys that they can take outside to play in the dirt.

The kitchen was the next surprise! Do you want a nice cozy tea? They have a very nice tea set there! Want to slow cook a roast? There is a clay pot for that! I really felt like i could have cooked or baked anything in this well stocked kitchen!

The next thing to mention is how clean this place is! I think a big part is that they ask you to take your shoes off in the mud room and it shows in the carpet!

Now to our favorite spot! The garden! There is a fruit and herb garden a little path up from the cabin. You are allowed to snack at all goodies! We sat on a little bench in the sun while the kids ate their fill. The Huckleberries were so sweet and we got lucky enough to find a couple of raspberries. We grabbed some chives for our scrambled eggs and went back the next morning.

We will back, and next time we will only come for a Prancing Pony vacation. We loved it, the kids loved it. Thank you for this wonderful place and all the care and love the owners put into it.
Manager response:
Thank you for sharing such a glowing review! We are so happy that you had such a great time and cant wait for you to come back.
Jennifer E. Aug 2015
We really enjoyed our stay at the Prancing Pony, and it was obvious that the owners love it and take pride in it. It was very clean, very tidy and comfortable. A couple of little notes if you choose this location: the pillows are quite squishy so if you prefer a firm pillow, bring your own. The staircase to the upstairs room is narrow and opens into the downstairs bedroom, so anyone staying upstairs must go through the master bedroom. One other quirk is that the refrigerator is a dorm-sized fridge, not a full-sized fridge. It wasn't a big problem, as we kept things simple, but I was glad I hadn't bought items that needed to stay frozen. Make sure to print out your directions prior to coming, as you will not be able to access them in the no-cell-zone. In addition, make sure you do any planning prior to coming back in from town, as we had difficulty making some of our arrangements even with the local telephone service. Be aware that it is a 5 minute drive from the main road, and then another 5 minutes into town. Not inaccessible, just requires some planning.

Otherwise, it was a gorgeous location, and we wish we'd had one more day to stay and just explore the property more. The kids really enjoyed the garden, and I wish we'd picked more of the fruit (as the owners invite you to do). We saw a fox and several banana slugs, and loved the wonderful woodsy smells. It was a delightful little place, and, with the notes mentioned above, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
