The location is really great. Loved the layout of the home. It was baby friendly for my 2 year old and convenient to be so close to the house when we were coming off the beach. No long trek with tons of bags and a small child. Also, we brought an inflatable baby pool and were able to fill it with fresh water from the conveniently located hose on the dock attached to the house. The views from every angle of the house are stunning. The kitchen is well equipped. The Roku tv in every room was very convenient. The wall mounted, curved flat screen in the living room was a swivel mount and another plus for the convenience factor when putting on a show for my young son to watch while we attended to cooking supper.

Loved everything!! Had ants in kitchen and internet spotty, other than that everything was perfect!!

We had 2 families here… 8 people. We had an amazing time! They have everything you need. The location and views are amazing!
Thank you for being great host. Will definitely stay again.

I did a lot of research to find a relaxing beach getaway location where my adult children, their significant others, and I could enjoy a vacation together. Dauphin Beach sounded and looked like a good choice, so I began looking at various properties. Although I looked at several possibilities, Playa Mariposa kept drawing me back, so I booked it. And boy am I glad I did! I highly recommend this property as we had such a marvelous time here!

There is so much to like about Playa Mariposa. First, it is roomy as it provides 4 bedrooms and 2 baths as well as a spacious living area and kitchen with lots of seating. The kitchen is well appointed with plenty of plates, bowls, glasses, and eating utensils. There are a variety of pots & pans, baking sheets, colanders, mixing bowls, knives (and even a set of steak knives), two blenders (although one was cracked and leaked when I used it), cutting boards, a coffee maker and Keurig, a crockpot, can openers, garlic press, and hand mixer. I have been to other beach houses where the kitchen provided less than stellar amounts and varieties of kitchen items and where needed items had not been provided. With the exception of having a few more serving utensils, this was not the case here! The refrigerator was nice and big, which was great as we cooked most of our meals during our stay and brought plenty of groceries with us. Family members sat at the bar stools at the island or the kitchen table while others cooked. The table is a good size with two chairs and two benches easily accommodating 8 adults. Plus, there are four bar stools at the kitchen island providing plenty of seating for meals. There is a functional gas grill on the deck as well as a picnic table and two Adirondack chairs. The place was very clean upon arrival, which is incredibly important to me. We were also quite pleased with the amount of towels and washcloths both bathrooms held. There is no need to bring extras as this place has plenty. The owners thought of just about everything as there are even extra blankets and throws in the bathroom linen closets. The views from the two bedrooms with the king sized beds are stellar! One of the rooms opens to the deck while the other has large windows where you can lie in bed and enjoy the view. This house is light, bright, clean, adorably decorated, cozy, functional, well kept, and well appointed. Kudos to the owners!

During our stay, we encountered a couple of issues. I contacted Vacasa, and Blake responded quickly. We thought the refrigerator wasn't working as it was warm and not cooling down a couple of hours after we filled it up with our groceries. I was concerned as I didn't want our things to go bad and spoil. Blake assured us this was normal and to give it a couple of hours as this is common. He was right! Within a couple of hours, the refrigerator was functioning normally and had chilled our items. Blake assured me the cost of the items would be reimbursed if it didn't start working properly, which was quite reassuring since we had spent a good amount of money on food and drink items. The second issue was only have one parking pass. He had replacements for the missing two passes delivered by the next morning after we arrived. (The passes are needed for parking in certain areas on the island and for parking at the house.) Third, we ran out of propane one night while grilling dinner. Blake with Vacasa quickly responded and hooked us up with a replacement tank. We were able to resume grilling in less than 1/2 hour. Finally, our electricity went out for a total of 4.5 hours. He let me know when I contacted him of the estimated time for it being back on again. He was right! Blake provided excellent service and communication with us without making us feel like we were bothering him. Thanks, Blake!

So, what did we do for fun? My sons fished off the back deck and caught a plethora of fish. They never tired of it and spent hours each day doing so. Everyone else spent time playing in the water, looking for seashells, sitting on the deck soaking up the sun and enjoying the view or reading books, setting up hammocks under the house and enjoying time swaying over the waves, walking the beach, and playing lots of board and card games. At night, we walked the beach looking for crabs, which were plentiful. I also enjoyed going for early morning runs. There is an established lane just for bicycles, golf carts, and pedestrians. We did hit up a few of the shops and eateries and went for walks to the public beach at the end of the island. Hearing the waves and being gently rocked while falling asleep at night brought a sweet ending to each day.

Things to note:
*The house's exterior has changed since pictures on this site were taken. It is now a vibrant blue color.
*This is not a touristy type of destination with lots of activities for families to do beyond the beach. (This is what we wanted. We didn't need things such as miniature golf, adventure parks, parasailing, etc. as our plans were simply to enjoy being directly on the water with the beautiful views and spend as much time with each other and in the water as possible.) There are a few shops, a gas station, bait and tackle stores, eateries, a bird sanctuary, charter fishing opportunities, & Fort Gaines.
*The house moves and there is a constant sound from the waves. We loved it, but it could be bothersome to others. You can hear the waves, but the windows are such a good quality that they block out a lot of the sound. Open the door, and you hear the roar of the waves. (We were at Playa Mariposa during a time when we had continually strong waves and constant winds.)
*Although others had mentioned seeing dolphins and other sea life, we were disappointed that we didn't see any. I'm sure it was due to the weather as it rained part of the time during our stay and again, the winds and waves were quite strong. The bay and sound, on the opposite site of the gulf where this property is located, were much calmer during our visit.
*We had been to areas such as Destin and Ft. Walton where the sand is white and the waters are a beautiful blue-green color. The water here was not clear and beautiful during our visit as it was never calm. It looked a bit on the brown side, but this was not an issue for us.
*Bring your groceries with you as it is quite pricey to buy forgotten items at the local store. (ex: $5.69 for a bag of sugar) There is a Dollar General about 20 minutes away, but most stores are a good hour away.
*A roll of paper towels, several rolls of toilet paper, a few pods for the dishwasher and washing machine, and a small bottle of dishwashing liquid were left for our use. You will want to bring more if you plan to use those things a lot. You will also need to bring your own spices as salt and pepper are the only ones provided.
*Need an urgent care? The closest one is an hour away. (We found this out when my son got a fish barb stuck in his hand.)
*If you like to fish, bring your fishing poles! There is one available in the closet in the laundry room but you will need to bring bait and tackle with you. My sons visited the local bait and tackle shop where a gentleman hooked them up with all the things he thought would do them well.
*Golf carts are available to rent on the island and make it easy to get around while here.
*Your feet are going to get wet and sandy going from the car to the house. However, there is an outdoor shower where you can rinse off your feet (and body) at the end of the walkway leading to the house.
*Two beach chairs are provided. A kayak was advertised as being at the house, but we didn't see one. Perhaps it was removed since the waves were so powerful.
*The back deck is large. Half of it is covered. This is great for those who want to be outside but not in direct sunlight.
*Ready for some laid-back time relaxing? This is the place for you! Playa Mariposa is perfect for families with young or grown children, friends who want to vacay together, or two separate families (one family can stay on one side of the house while the other stays on the opposite side).

The house was neat as a pin when we arrived and was an amazing location. When the tide was out, we could sit under the house for shade. When the tide was high, the waves came under the house. The house rocked a little with the waves, but we enjoyed it. From the deck the first morning we saw dauphins jumping, two sting rays, and a black tipped shark swimming below our deck. The guys fished from the dock, and the kids enjoyed the sand toys in the closet. 100% would book again and suggest it to anyone.

Beautiful view. Cute house. When you look out the windows, it feels like you are on a cruise since the house is quite literally in the water.
Janet P. Mar 2022
This is a very comfortable, well appointed home. Being right on the water set the stage for a great family get together. Everything you might need is at this home.
Thank you for the lovely vacation setting!

We LOVED our stay at Playa. We spent every day fishing off the deck, laying on the beach and walking up and down the shoreline looking for shells. We loved to watch the dolphins and pelicans feeding in the evening. We slept with the door cracked every night so we could listen to the waves under the house. We were very impressed by the 'extras' that the house had including a few pods of dishwasher soap, laundry soap and a small container of dish soap to that we could use the amenities without having to go buy a bunch of stuff. Vacasa was quick to respond when we had questions. The house set up was ideal for two families to come and we will be back with our moms and kid for the next trip :) Thanks again

We picked this house for partially being in the ocean and we got 24/7 waves. Loved every minute of it. The kitchen had a few chipped dishes/glasses and missing a measuring cup for liquids (not a big deal deal). We got a vehicle stuck in the sand parking (was a big deal at the moment) and couldn’t figure out satellite TV (big deal for college football fans). The management sent help right away and it was greatly appreciated. If you don’t like the sound or feel of waves hitting against the piers of the house, this is not the place for you. We loved it, though and had a wonderful time and thankful for the beautiful weather, even in December. We had seen Herons, Pelicans, a stingray and Dolphins all from the balcony while drinking coffee. We’d definitely like to come back and bring more family.

Absolutely the best location of the 6 times we've been to the area. So incredible to have meals over the water and listen to the waves crashing UNDERNEATH you. Not a problem for us at all but just for future renters, this house does move with the water. Some rooms are more pronounced than others but if you're sensitive to that just fyi. Also, the front door has no lock from the inside. Back in the day when I had small children this would have been a safety issue for us. Again, just fyi. The house was well stocked and having a Keurig was fantastic. However, the walls have dust ALL over them. It was quite gross. Most other reviews would say a deep cleaning would be needed but this just needs a solid cleaning. Please swiffer these walls and dust accordingly. A few of us had sore throats after getting there because of the amount of dust in the rooms. Even the closet bar was thick with dust. The garbage container had mold on it but a nice young lady from Vacasa quickly came to clean it. Lastly we have a bad taste in our mouth from the customer service this time around with Vacasa. Again, this is our SIXTH rental, we've easily spent over $20 grand in this company. We drove 18 hours and show up at 3pm. We park at the house and give Vacasa a call to see if we can get in an hour early. To which the lady says some stuff about the cleaners needed to clean etc. I tell her NO ONE is at the house, we have 7 kids, can we please get in. Again, she says the cleaners have to clean (again, it's an hour prior to check in, if they haven't started now there is no way it'll be done in time but ok, if you say so). So that was the end of the conversation. We then SAT in the car, right in front of the house for an hour until 4. No one showed up, of course. And then at 4pm, guess what? The code didn't work. I mean, seriously? You make us wait for absolutely no reason other than a power trip and then make us wait even longer. Not happy with this at all. We might go to another rental company after this poor experience. But this house, minus Vacasa (and a good swiffering) is great.

We enjoyed our stay at Playa Mariposa. Clean and nicely decorated. Vacasa team was very helpful when we accidentally locked ourselves out. I am so appreciative of the Vacasa team 😃

Amazing property we will definitely come back ❤️❤️❤️

We absolutely loved this house!! There’s a closet full of beach chairs, sand toys, and games. The kitchen is well stocked (toaster, multiple coffee pots, crock pot, and a magic bullet. Plus tons of cookware.) We also had access to a kayak and paddle boards. Having the deck was WONDERFUL!! There’s a hose and shower, which made it simple for us to fill a kiddie pool for my toddler when he got tired of the waves and the sand. Beds were comfy! And FYI, the couch pulls out into a bed and there’s trundle beds not only under the twins, but under the bunk beds, too! We will be back SOON!!
Manager response:
We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.  We look forward to hosting you again!

We love this house. We packed it full with our 6 month old twins, dogs, and adults. Perfect house for the group they can’t make the beach all day. Makes you feel directly at the beach the entire time.
Jaimie T. Aug 2021
This home has it ALL!! Beautiful and spacious, this home offers something for everyone! The owners have thought of everything and made our vacation memories better than we had hoped possible! We saw so much oceanlife right from our balcony (sting rays, dolphins, blue crab, etc.) - it was amazing!
Jayne N. Jul 2021
I loved the house, the location, the island, the people. Falling asleep with the waves crashing was so restful. While the house is listed as sleeping 12 it could easily sleep more if you have children or teenagers. There are 2 huge beanbag chairs that our kids slept in several nights, Also the couch was slept on at various times. Everyone had a bed but the house was just overall comfort.

Robin G. Jun 2021
We loved the house, it is just as the pictures show. It was amazing to be in the water (inside the house). The beds and pillows were so comfortable. Everything was so clean. The cleanliness was appreciated, as our original reservation in Fl through another company was filthy. We left that day and were lucky to find this house. Everyone said they wanted to come back next year!
Jackie N. May 2021
Location was great. The local management was so helpful and responsive. The house had everything we needed. Very nice stay!!
Nick B. Apr 2021
Everything about the house and location was perfect. Management was great with answering questions. It was awesome being able to hear the waves throughout the house, even with the windows closed. The owners of this home are very nice and have lots of beach / water equipment to use.
Lisa B. Apr 2021
You will not regret this stay! Private, beautiful, very clean and literally over the gulf! We swam, fished, collected shells, and laughed until our cheeks hurt! We will be back! Don’t think about it, book it!
Amy B. Aug 2020
The house was literally steps from the water. The owners have kept the property very clean and have it stocked with anything you might need. We ate dinner every night on the deck and watched the waves roll in. We saw several dolphins every morning while we had our coffee. We will definitely stay here again. It set the bar very high!
Jason U. May 2020
The house is super kid friendly, they had lots of toys for them. Super cute 4 bedroom right on the water! We enjoyed many activities while we stayed and had the most amazing time! I highly recommend especially if you have kiddos!
Lucas S. May 2020
Awesome island, awesome house. Just what we needed for a long weekend!
Heather S. May 2020
I can’t say it enough. The location is the TOP on all of Dauphin Island!!
Kim D. May 2020
First time to Dauphin Island, want be the last. Beautiful place. If your looking for quite, relaxing, RIGHT ON THE BEACH, look no further. Clean and great decor. 2 beach chairs, paddle boards, kayak with life vests. I miss it already.
WESLEY R. May 2020
We just finished up our visit and could have stayed longer. There was plenty of room for my family of 5 and our family friends of 4. The kids (and parents) had a blast social distancing here! The owners happened to be in the area and were kind enough to loan us extra paddle boards and an additional kayak. Thanks to them we were all able to enjoy time up close with a pod of dolphins that were straight out from this beautiful home. We can't wait to visit again soon.
Wendell I. Apr 2020
Loved this beach house and how it sits right at the waters edge. We stayed here for 8 nights and could have stayed much longer!!
Kelly B. Mar 2020
You cannot get any closer to the water than this house as it literally is right on the water! We booked this house a week before coming as our Disney World trip was canceled due to Covid-19. This was the absolute best place to social distance ourselves from the rest of the world while still getting to enjoy this slice of heaven on the beach. The views from the two rooms with king sized beds is breathtaking. I woke up every morning looking out on the water & enjoyed stepping out onto the deck directly from my room. The other bedsrooms had plenty of space with one having two twin beds with trundles & the other room with a twin/full bunk bed/trundle. You can feel the Gulf breezes through the house with the windows open. The house was as described in the pictures. Clean, bright, and plenty of space to stretch out. Two of us are emergency department RN's & we were able to unwind to the sounds of waves crashing while reading books on the deck or beach. Plenty of sand toys (we used them to carry our haul of nice shells), a kayak, boogie boards, two paddle boards & a few beach chairs to use. Plus an outdoor shower to get the sand off before going into the house. My 2 adult daughters, 1 teen daughter & I had an amazing time here. We had never been to Dauphin Island before but we WILL definitely be back!!
Jonathan W. Mar 2020
Awesome home everything was as described great local people and the fishing was awesome and they have plenty of toys for sand and water for the kids will definitely be back soon
Brannon G. Mar 2020
We loved everything about it. The location, the weather, the accommodations. I highly recommend this to everybody who is considering this island. Thumbs up!!!
Stephen R W. Feb 2020
We Loved EVERY SINGLE thing about this Home! Tastefully Decorated Home, with room to spread out, comfortable beds, and amazing views!😍
Rebecca E. Dec 2019
We arrived on a cold rainy night to find no lights, no heat, and no hot water. We were told the owner thought he had fixed these problems, but could not get someone out to fix it properly for two weeks.
We had rented this house twice before and wanted to introduce more of our children to its lovely location. It was not a pleasant first night, but we were offered a different house the next day and moved there for the remainder of our vacation.
Manager response:
Rebecca, we sincerely apologize that these persistent electrical issues prevented you from enjoying another great vacation in the home. Due to the home's location and positioning, it has proven difficult to fully address necessary repairs. We are happy to report that these repairs are scheduled and we hope to have them addressed shortly. We look forward to hosting you for a great stay in the future!
Shelia C. Oct 2019
This house is in the water, You do not have to take any steps other that to walk out your front door to play in the water/sand. Perfect location for family with young children. You just walk up your steps for lunch, naps or bathroom trips.
Catherin G. Oct 2019
Great location, house is awesome- laid out perfect for two families with master/bath and a kids room on each side with common area in middle. Fishing off deck was a great time we all loved- will be back.
Debbie T. Sep 2019
I absolutely love this house, this is the 2nd or 3rd time at this house. It has everything you need, and you literally just walk down the stairs and your on the beach. Will definitely be back again next year!
Jeffrey C. Sep 2019
The house was a great stay and in a great location. couldn't have asked for better.
Caroline Z. Aug 2019
Nice place to stay for a weekend ! Beautiful scenery. Toys for kids to play with and a lot of utensils in the kitchen. It was our first stay so close to the sea. We liked it but may not try the experience quickly gets noisy and pushes you back indoors. However everything described was correct.
Ryan K. Jun 2019
Great house!!
Alison F. May 2019
If you want a relatively quiet, relaxing time, mostly hanging on the beach, and with your dog, this is the one for you. Being right on the beach makes it so easy. Great for walking the dog, collecting shells, building sand castles etc. The home has all the modern comforts including good water pressure. Comfy beds - the sound of the waves lulls one to sleep at night. Bed/bath layout I thought was ideally for two families with children but it suited us well enough - a married couple with grown son and his uncle. Great deck we used it for eating meals, watching the birds and boats and my son and brother did a spot of fishing. Mostly gorgeous weather, on a couple of days we had to take advantage of some shade under the house! A storm on the second night kicked out the power (which was resumed within 24 hours) - this added to the excitement of the week and gave us an opportunity to (have to) go to Mobile exploring! We all had a wonderful time.
Sarah M. Apr 2019
We had a wonderful time at this home. It was beautiful inside and out. The beach was relaxing, there was a blue heron that came to visit us everyday. Dolphins swam within 50 feet of the deck, we caught several fish along with a hammerhead shark and a bull shark off the deck. There was a hammock to hang under the home which would be wonderful once the weather warms up. There’s always a nice breeze on the deck also. All bedrooms were wonderful. We enjoyed the rooms that were connected by a bathroom in order to keep an eye on our three year old. There was more than enough supplies/utensils for cooking large meals. Truly wonderful memories here and enjoyed the island also.
Henry H. Apr 2019
The beach house was exactly as advertised and we enjoyed our stay very much. If you want to be right on the water (which we did) this is the place for you.
Michal W. Mar 2019
Everything was wonderful so I will mention two issues I found annoying. One, you can not pull up to the property. The closest you can park is about 20 yards away. Second, I am a light sleeper so I could hear the waves crashing through the night. Make sure to take the earplugs if you are a light sleeper like myself. Other than that, wondrful stay.
Maryleee C. Mar 2019
It was awesome.. We will be back next year for sure..
It was everything the pictures posted said it would be..
The staff was above an beyond helpful... ( Elton)

House was nicely decorated, had all the amenities and located on a beautiful area of Dauphin Island. Made our family Thanksgiving trip one of the most memorable. Would definitely stay there again
Danielle S. Jul 2018
Our family has nothing but good things to say about this home and this company! We had thirteen people at the home and still had more than enough room for everything! The home is the perfect size and the bedrooms are comfortable and accommodating. The bean bags in the living room made the perfect addition and gave us enough space for everyone. The dining room and back porch were perfect for playing games and sitting around. The location of the house is so cool sitting right in the water with access to everything. We enjoyed stepping right out onto the beach everyday. The kayak and paddle board provided hours upon hours of enjoyment for everyone, each morning we had a couple of dolphins we were able to kayak right beside! All of the employees were exceptional and dealt with all of us constantly calling to make payments without hassle! The home had everything we needed for breakfast, lunch, dinner and they provided us with a blender and coffee pot per our request. I would recommend this house over and over again!!
Jeff B. Jun 2018
We absolutely loved this home and working with this rental agency. The house was perfect. The sound of the waves crashing right outside the house at night was the most peaceful thing ever. We laid in bed at night overlooking the gulf and it was surreal. This house is super kid friendly. I love being able to let my kids play in the sand under the house, out of the sun. We saw king crabs and dolphins from the balcony. Book this home, you won't regret it.

A wonderfully quiet week on Dauphin. House was perfect.
