Make Kamuela your next getaway

Known as Waimea by locals, Kamuela is one of Hawaii’s most unique locations: a ranching area with rolling hills and pastures. While the white sand beaches and crystal waters are an idyllic setting in their own right, locals see these lush and verdant hills as their own prime getaway location. Our Kamuela vacation rentals are situated among some of the Big Island’s most popular attractions, while still giving a unique experience.

Recent Kamuela guest reviews

We loved our stay at this special artist-decorated island oasis. The location is hard to beat on a quiet road directly across from a beach access point where you can snorkel and see turtles (this cove is a favorite spot of theirs!). We also liked making a cocktail at the house and bringing it over to the ocean to watch sunset. It’s a two-minute walk to the local general store for groceries and last-minute essentials. Beach 69 is just up the road, and some of the other best beaches, like Mauna Kea and hapuna, are a short drive away. There’s also a huge lawn and beautiful garden where we loved sipping our morning coffee. The house is super comfortable to stay in and has everything you need. There is a large common space and the A/C in the rooms keeps everything comfortable on warm nights. The host was very responsive and clearly pours her heart into creating a special paradise here. The house had everything we needed and looks exactly like the pictures show. The boogie boards, bicycles, coolers, beach chairs and wagon were a lovely addition. We also enjoyed the beautiful (and warm) outdoor shower for rinsing off and taking showers after a day at the beach. We loved having this as our home to explore the island and will definitely be returning!

The location of the unit, the barbecue on the lanai, and the pools on the property were wonderful. Overall, the condo was cozy.

Where is Kamuela, HI?

Located in the northernmost region of the Big Island, the borders of Kamuela extend into the Pu'u O Umi Natural Area Reserve and the Kohala Forest Reserve. This lush area offers respite from the buzz of the day-to-day in the rest of the area. Waipi’o Valley in particular is one of the most scenic areas of the island, with an abundance of hiking trails leading to gorgeous vistas and black sand beaches. Kamuela is also home to Parker Ranch, the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the United States. This area has a deep-rooted history in ranching. In fact, the annual Fourth of July rodeo has become one of the most popular events in town.

Things to do in Kamuela, HI

Our Kamuela condo rentals are perfectly situated for accessing all that the Big Island has to offer. A 15-minute drive takes you to some of the island’s best beaches at Mauna Kea Resort. The area is open to the public and attracts guests for its powdery sand, calm waters, and two small coral reefs. This beach is very popular—and for good reason—but if you find the parking lot full, make the one-mile drive south to Hapuna Beach State Park. This area is lesser known but still perfect for an afternoon spent exploring and sunbathing in the white sands.

While Hawaii is famous for being a destination to unwind and relax, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy. Drive an hour north and you’ll arrive at Kohala Zipline, where you can hike, rappel, and zip through a sustainably built course. Hear the wind rushing in your ears as you soar past vistas of the Kohala Coast, reaching speeds up to 45 miles per hour.

If you’re looking for something a bit less intense, the annual Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival spans several months in the early springtime. The festival celebrates the Japanese tradition of hanami, or the welcoming of spring. At Kamuela, you’ll have the pleasure of seeing more than 60 cherry blossom trees burst into color.

After you’re done exploring the Big Island and strolling around town, our Kamuela vacation rentals are the perfect place to relax in the region’s iconic rolling hills and valleys. Book today and start your journey to this unique Hawaiian paradise.
