Where is Gunnison, CO?
At an elevation of 7,703 feet, Gunnison features a convenient, central location, just 180 miles from Colorado Springs and 200 miles from Denver. It's about 30 miles west of the Continental Divide where the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek converge. West of Gunnison, you'll find the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument 62 miles away and the Curecanti National Recreation Area 16 miles away. Plentiful skiing can be found at Monarch Mountain and in Crested Butte, 42 miles east and 28 miles north, respectively. Of course, the famous ski resort of Breckenridge
isn't far north, either.
Winter Activities in Gunnison
In the winter, Gunnison and its surrounding area is a veritable winter wonderland of opportunities for all kinds of skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, and ice fishing. Partake in the snowy fun at Crested Butte
, and strap on your skis or board to carve your way down the mountain over pristine powder and 1,547 acres of terrain. Take a guided snowshoe tour and learn about the history of the area and alpine ecosystems as you trek your way across land untouchable by skis or snowboards, or glide your way through the silence of fresh snow on cross-country skis.
For a more adrenaline-inducing activity, rent a snowmobile and careen through the backcountry for some of Colorado's most stunning mountain scenery. Work on your toe jumps and edge jumps at Crested Butte Nordic ice rink or visit Blue Mesa Reservoir in the Curecanti National Recreation Area to do some ice fishing at the largest fishery in the state!
Water Activities in Gunnison
Summer brings a plethora of outdoor activities to the area, and those who gravitate toward water will have more than their share of things to do. Taylor Park covers all the bases for water enthusiasts, offering premier fishing along the Taylor River with its meandering streams and the stunning Collegiate Peaks as a backdrop. Drop in your lure and settle in for an afternoon of tranquility as you listen to the mesmerizing sound of flowing water and breathe in the sharp scent of pine pitch.

Outdoor Adventures in Gunnison
The Gunnison area offers plenty of other adventures, too, like mountain biking on the excellent trails with stunning views in Taylor Park. Hundreds of miles of single track and mountain biking trails are offered in Gunnison County - make sure to make your way to Hartman Rocks for a fantastic paradise where you can mountain bike, hike, rock climb, and much more. Rent a jeep or four-wheeler and make your way through seldom-traveled roads in Taylor Canyon, explore the many trails by foot to encounter desert views and fascinating rock formations, or get back in the saddle and go sightseeing by horseback. After you've sufficiently explored Taylor Park, head to Hartman's Rock for similar activities, as well as rock climbing and motocross.
Other areas worth your time and attention are taking a day trip to Lake City, just 54 miles south, or hiking in the Fossil Ridge Wilderness. If you have any desire to get off the ground, you can float silently and weightlessly through the sky in a hot air balloon and enjoy a unique and mystical view of the area. This is an especially perfect activity in autumn when the leaves put on a spectacular show of color! Take a scenic drive and make the loop from Gunnison northeast to Tincup to Pitkin to Ohio City for some of the most spectacular and breathtaking views you'll find in Colorado.
The summer months offer a fantastic whitewater park on the edge of town. Slather on some sunscreen and rent a pontoon boat or wakeboard on Blue Mesa! While hunters will find excellent mule, deer, and elk hunting in the fall, visitors will also be treated to some of the most beautiful autumn leaf viewing in the country.
