This beautiful freshwater lake is about 328 feet deep and named after the infamous Donner Party. Located in Truckee, Donner Lake is home to swimming, fishing (trout and Kokanee salmon call the lake home), sailing, and even water-skiing. There is a very popular Fourth of July fireworks celebration with all-day festivities, an annual Donner Lake Swim every August, and in November a Turkey Trot Run around the clear blue water. In winter, it's only a 30 minute drive to a number of popular Lake Tahoe ski resorts—Squaw Valley, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, Boreal, and Soda Springs. Closer to your Donner Lake retreat in Donner Memorial State Park, a lot of the summer hiking trails turn into winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails—just bring your sense of adventure and maybe a camera to capture some beautiful winter images.
If you're in the mood for a day trip, head a few miles south to any number of cities right on sparkling blue Lake Tahoe—Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, and
Carnelian Bay are all a short drive away and offer beaches, shops, and other attractions. And just across the Nevada state line, there are casinos and other entertainment in Crystal Bay.
