Beautiful house with quiet surroundings.
Jason B. | Jun 2025
We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was cleaned and well stocked with kitchen necessities, though I would suggest clearing out all the old random utensils and flatware and upgrading to some new basic sets. The beds were comfy and the bathrooms clean with more than enough towels. The hot tub was very clean and wonderful to relax in. Fire pit was great too! We brought our own wood but it looked like there was a lot of wood available to use. I would definitely stay here again!

Where is Swanton, MD?

Swanton is located in the sparsely populated western panhandle of Maryland, in the heart of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. Despite its remoteness, it remains easily accessible from many of the East Coast's major cities (two hours from Pittsburgh, and a little over three from Baltimore and Washington DC), making it a peaceful escape from the bustle of urban life.

Things to do in Swanton, MD

With a population of only 58 people, Swanton's tiny size belies its enormous variety of year-round outdoor activities. Within a 15-mile radius, you'll find Maryland's tallest free-flowing waterfall (Muddy Creek Falls, at 54 feet), its largest lake (Deep Creek Lake, with 69 miles of shoreline), and its biggest state park (Savage River State Forest, with 54,000 acres of densely wooded hills).

These spectacular natural areas have endowed the region with a reputation as an all-season recreational mecca. In the winter, head north to Wisp Mountain, where you can ski, snowboard, and bobsled down a 700-foot vertical drop. In the summer, choose between boating, hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, or white-water rafting - to name just a few! Be sure to also stop by the quaint, nearby town of Oakland, where you'll find numerous antique stores, farmers markets, and outdoor festivals.

When you're looking for a country retreat away from the noise of the big city, our vacation rentals in Swanton offer a relaxing and refreshing change of pace. Book a stay and get back to nature!
