You'll walk in the footsteps of Hollywood royalty at this incredibly private, luxurious estate in the famous Movie Colony of Palm Springs. This historic property, built in 1929 in gorgeous Spanish Colonial style, was once owned by 20th Century Fox as a place to entertain its stars and later became the first desert home of John Phillips, the leader of The Mamas & The Papas. Over the course of its lifetime, the estate has been the five-star retreat of actors, Hollywood executives, and even Bugsy Segal himself, who is said to have gambled frequently in the detached casita.
The L-shaped floor plan encompasses nearly 5,000 square feet, with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and a center courtyard designed in the style of a Spanish hacienda. This century-old home is adorned with handmade red clay roof tiles, smooth plaster walls accented by native rock, as well as the original casement windows and light fixtures, all of which have contributed to its status as a Class 1 Historic Site designated by the City of Palm Springs in 2010.
The grounds are a wonder to behold, with mature hedges that ensure the utmost in privacy and only mountain ridgelines and swaying palms that rise above them. You can spend quiet days lounging by the sparkling swimming pool and spillover spa, feeling the soft grass beneath your feet, and grilling and dining in the various bistro sets positioned in courtyards around the property.
The interior is richly furnished, with a west wing that houses three of the bedrooms: a small suite, a large suite, and a master suite, each with its own bathroom. The east wing is home to the so-called Chauffeur Room, where you'll find a king-size bed, an en suite bathroom, and a private entrance. The fifth bedroom, the Sky Room, is located on the second floor, offering its own exterior access and lovely views of the mountains. The sixth bedroom awaits in the separate garden casita, known as the Casino Room for its storied history of star-studded poker tournaments. The casita features cathedral ceilings with exposed wood beams, the largest fireplace known in Palm Springs, and a bedroom with a king-size bed - there's even a secret lookout room that's accessed via the bedroom closet.
This incredible Palm Springs estate is ideally located in the Movie Colony, next door to the Cary Grant home in a small enclave of private estates known as Las Hacenditas. You'll be just a few steps from Ruth Hardy Park, where you can play tennis each morning, and less than half a mile (a two-minute drive or a five-minute walk) from the heart of downtown Palm Springs. All along Palm Canyon Drive, you'll have your choice of great restaurants, shops, art galleries, mid-century modern antique shops, theaters, and nightlife. More than 100 world-class golf courses await in the surrounding area as well.
