Dog-friendly home with deck & firepit - half a mile to beach

The Sand Dollar, one of four cabins in the Mendocino Coast Dunes Retreat, can be rented together with the other three cabins or separately as a great place to stay during your amazing vacation. With a dog-friendly attitude and a comfortable interior, everyone will love it here!

Located right next to the dunes, about seven miles north of Fort Bragg, this vacation rental is in a great position for you to enjoy everything the area has to offer. The ocean is just over a half-mile away (though you will have to hike over some sand dunes), and MacKerricher State Park, well-known for its hiking trails and seal-watching, stretches to the south of this vacation home.

With one bedroom and one bathroom, this home can sleep up to six people, and is also dog-friendly. With a queen bed in the bedroom and two fold-out futons, a close-knit family or group of friends will be very comfortable here.

In the living room, you will find a large TV equipped with cable and a DVD player, plus board games and a lovely gas fireplace. You will also have a private laundry area, so there's no need to worry if your clothes get a little dirty during your vacation. Complimentary WiFi is also available.

Outside, you will discover a private deck and firepit. You will love roasting some marshmallows at the end of a fun-filled day.

This would be a fabulous cabin to rent on its own, or you could combine with family members, friends, coworkers, or others and rent all four cabins for a large event! With Fort Bragg 10 minutes south, and Mendocino about 25 minutes down the road, you will be surrounded by the beauty of nature but still close enough to the conveniences of the city.

With a great location and fantastic amenities, this Mendocino vacation rental is just waiting for you to have adventures here!

It was a great house in a nice quiet spot. Wonderful 😊 We enjoyed our stay very much.
Thomas B. Apr 2022
I booked this stay because it said it had free wifi and I am taking online college courses, I have never written a review before let alone a negative one but this really screwed me over because there is no reception there either. If it wasn't for me having important assignments due that I could not turn the time away from the internet and outside world would have been nice. The place is really cute but a little creepy during the night because there is no curtains on the living room or kitchen windows and the windows in the back room do not close all the way. The place was pretty clean for the most part, the fire place was really nice and the plants outside were all cute.
Manager response:
Thomas, we are truly sorry to hear that you’ve had a less than stellar experience with us. We pride ourselves on providing the best possible vacation experience, and it sounds like we missed the mark this time around. We will schedule a service visit to check the WiFi and assess the curtains for replacement. We hope you will give us a second chance to better impress you!

I wonderful weekend getaway just for our family needed !! The owners of the property were fantastic and making sure we had everything we needed .. definitely would love to go back !

The home was very clean and had everything you need to enjoy your stay! The internet is very spotty, but they tell you that upfront. The furniture really needs an update. The couch and chairs are very uncomfortable and low to the ground. would be very hard for the elderly to get in and out of. The bed is extremely hard and very high. Also very hard for the elderly to get in and out of. Plenty of beaches nearby, by car only but within 10 min drive. You can not walk to a beach from the home. The home was perfect for the 2 of us and our dogs! Quiet and peaceful.

We had a very quiet and enjoyable vacation at Sand Dollar. Our choice of rental hinged on the wonderful location, accommodation for our dog, and a fully working kitchen. Our goal was to prepare our own meals and not have to eat out too much, as eating out with a dog is not always easy.
The weather was as expected and after our long hot summer we enjoyed the cooler temperatures.
Sand Dollar provides a great deal of space, both inside and out, and theoretically sleeps 6. The Queen size bed is raised so high it is difficult for us older folks. The futon in the sitting room is difficult to use; it is heavy and requires some strength to convert it from sofa to bed and back again. The futon in the back room is easier to convert but offers little comfort for older bones.

The kitchen has frugal amenities. Limited number of dinner plates, small plates, bowls etc. so we needed to wash dishes often, and there were too few to use the dishwasher. Due to drought conditions in California, we were surprised by the lack of a stopper for the kitchen sink to conserve water for dishwashing. We had brought an unsliced loaf of bread with us, but could not find a bread knife, and available knives were not very sharp so it was difficult to make sandwiches.

On arrival we found a notice advising us of a faulty stove and cooktop, so limiting the opportunities to cook. Two of the burners were operational and that sufficed for our short 4-night stay, however at some point during our stay the microwave stopped working, and the space heater in the bathroom would not work – presumably on the same circuit breaker. On searching for a fuse box we were unable to find a breaker that fixed the problem, and since we had no cell coverage at this location – one of its benefits – and the land line offered no dial tone, we were unable to call for support. The fireplace worked very well and heated the property quickly. We did not use the washer or dryer so am not sure if they would have worked.

Tv service was quite poor with limited instructions. The internet was of low bandwidth and disconnected 3 or 4 times a day, so we were unable to stream anything from our online accounts and ended up watching the History Channel on the TV when we required outside entertainment.

I would recommend this location for its spacious accommodation, peace and quiet, and location, but the amenities did not really deliver as promised.

Great weekend in Fort Bragg. Lots of hiking and enjoying the vibe, food and drinks. The location of this house was great and could walk to 10 mile beach in the morning and watch the sunrise on the ocean.
Elizabeth W. Aug 2020
Great location on a quiet road walking distance to sand dunes.
Lani S. Aug 2020
Very comfortable and quiet. Great location. Loved hiking the sand dunes!
Christina K. Jul 2020
The Sand Dollar was a great place to stay. There’s lots of space to spread out and relax. It’s very secluded, but still close enough to everything. My dogs loved exploring the large property (there’s even a fenced side yard). The dunes are fun to explore (no dogs allowed though), as the entire area is part of a preserve, but there are plenty of dog friendly beaches close by. The only negative was that the two futons and the bed were very hard and uncomfortable. We would definitely stay here again, but maybe with a mattress pad or two.
Miranda F. Mar 2020
It’s a wonderful little cabin beside a much nicer main home which is also rentable. A beautiful set of dunes behind the hill and the beach is a short walk away! Wore socks all the way there (the sand felt amazing to walk on but there was the occasional sticker/goathead). Fireplace and space heaters so you’ll almost never be cold, and the jacuzzi was great! Service can come and go but WiFi seemed strong my entire stay. My pup loved the entire stay too, you can’t leave them home for this trip! A few downsides like the oven not heating further than 350, and the neighbors dog tends to visit from time to time. But he’s old and super friendly, just likes to use the bathroom with new friends lol
Manager response:
Thank you for providing feedback, Miranda. We are glad you enjoyed your stay! We appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention, and we will schedule a service visit to check the oven. We hope to have another chance to impress you in the future!
Kristen G. Mar 2020
It's a great little place to stay! Very clean. Right out the backyard is a giant sand dune that we climbed and walked to the ocean. The hot tub was nice after our hikes around the area also! The neighborhood is really chill, there are neighbors but you wouldn't know because everything is so quiet. Its about 10 minutes drive to fort bragg, and maybe 20 to mendocino. We enjoyed our stay there and would stay again!
Albert D. Feb 2020
Clean home, great kitchen, cozy fireplace, hot tub worked great the whole time! A beautiful walk to the beach (which was also fantastic)! Quiet neighborhood. A really great value, we plan on going back again!!!
Noel D. Feb 2020
Thank you, it was everything we hoped for, and would definately come back again - hopefully soon!
Patricia F. Feb 2020
My husband and I loved staying at this amazing gem! It was so huge and the yard was lovely. The pictures really do not do it justice. Highly recommend for a quiet romantic getaway or it’d be a great spot for a large group looking to be close to the outdoors and beach to explore while still having a place to go back to and relax comfortably
Mary B. Dec 2019
Another fantastic trip! I really appreciated the opportunity to add on late checkout on Sunday as it was a quick trip and we arrived late the first night. Comfortable, enjoyable with the rain we made it to the beach two days. I bring a NuWave oven and we have chocolate chip cookies and other treats. Can't wait to visit again!
Celina A. Oct 2019
Everything was great. Clean and nicely stocked. I would give it a 5 stars but the main queen bed was really hard and stiff. I was hoping for something a little more comfy. Just saying. Everything else was great. Thank you.
Sherry B. Sep 2019
Beautiful home, great for our two little dogs, quite, not far from the beach and town. Loved the spa, so relaxing can’t wait to go back.
Mary B. Sep 2019
I love the quiet and serenity of this little jewel, even though it is surrounded by other rentals. It is comfortable; few amenities but nothing missed, clean and reasonable. Offers much needed tranquility, a great location and a soothing hot tub. My grandson; 6, said next time he goes he will not leave...
Chris M. Aug 2019
It was a quiet location with all the comforts of home..

Mark M. Aug 2019
Great little home. Perfect for a couple. The one bathroom was a bit of a challenge for a family of four but that’s trivial. Plenty of amenities and only a 10 minute drive into town. Fort Bragg, however, was a different story.
Linda T. Jul 2019
I loved the privacy of the home. The location was in a very quiet area a little bit out of Fort Bragg. However, the owner should leave instructions on how to get to the beach via where the half mile walking trail is located. Behind the home is a very large sand dune, but there is very thick growth between the home and the dune, with no sign of where the trail may be located! Had to actually drive to Mackerricher state park to see the beach. The hot tub was amazing and relaxing. My dog loved the yard and home. So happy it was pet friendly! The home itself was very well stocked with necessary items such as pots pans, utensils, towels, bedding etc. A BBQ would have been nice though. But we made do with the stove! I would definitely stay here again. Great place for a very reasonable price!
Manager response:
We are so happy to hear you loved the home! Access to the pristine dunes and beach of Mackerricher State Park is just a short walk from the end of the private road, a brisk 15 to 20-minute walk, a bit slower through the sand dunes to get to the ocean. We are letting our local property managers know that instructions inside of the home may be helpful! Thank you for your feedback, and we hope to host you again soon!
Christopher W. Jul 2019
Sand Dollar had everything that we needed for a fun weekend escape from SF
Amiee B. Jul 2019
A rare hidden gem. Our first get away with our new puppy plenty of room for her to play close to the beach and the hot tub under the stars
marie o. May 2019
Clean staff was the best. Quit place to get away from it all.
Jerry C. Apr 2019
My girlfriend and I absolutely loved this quaint little gem, it was very homey and the bed was very comfortable!
Loved the fireplace and jacuzzi, it had most all kitchen equipment to make simple meals, the only issue was you had to light the cooktop with a lighter. Other than that it was amazing! Very private which was awesome! We will definitely be coming back to stay Whenever we visit Mendocino again!!
Lori D. Feb 2019
Nice secluded and cozy. Wonderful place to reconnect with that special someone

Sorry, I just don't get all the positive reviews. The house was very clean, but that is about it. When booking, I assumed the oven was in working order. Not until receiving the confirmation a week before our stay, were we told the oven did not work. I called Vacasa to see if perhaps there were plans to have the oven working before our stay. There wasn't. If you rent, read the amenities section carefully. It does not say there is a working stove or oven, even though there are pictures of the stove/oven on the website. Easy to assume they work. Vacasa was very generous in giving us a discount since it was not clear in the house description. The stove worked, but when one of the front burners was on, the other front burner kept clicking as if it wanted to start. The one lighter in the house to start the stove quit working two days in. Kitchen was well-stocked with pots and pans, glasses, plates and utensils--nothing more. No tin foil, plastic wrap, baggies or storage containers. There were no hangars--nothing to hang your coats on. There was no comfortable furniture in the house, including the bed. The bed was an old waterbed with an uncomfortable, worn mattress. The fold-out futons were not much better. There were lots of lights but the switches were in weird places, not where you would expect. Small steps (a couple of inches) to the bathroom and then again to the bedroom. Hard to navigate in the middle of the night. Definite trip hazard. The pilot light to the gas fireplace was not lit when we got there, but we called Vacasa and they got maintenance to the house right away. There was a TV and DVD player, but no channel guide or movies. The hot tub was clean and in working order.
I'm giving this house a 3 * because of it's cleanliness and closeness to the beach, but won't rent here again for the above-mentioned reasons.
Sebastien S. Feb 2019
Despite the rain all the week end we felt comfortable at Sand Dollar. Situation is great and we had all the equipment.
Mary B. Nov 2018
The house was clean, inviting and comfortable ~ as was the hot tub. Great for waking up, getting going, and coming back to relax at end of day. Not interrupted or bothered by anyone. Would highly recommend this rental!
Joan M. Oct 2018
Sand Dollar was perfect for my daughter, her boyfriend and me. It was clean, quiet and well stocked. Definitely worth every penny and will go back.
Kate N. Aug 2018
We visited Mendocino Dunes- Sand Dollar to get away from the hot temperatures along with the smoke of all the California fires. We loved the fog and temps in the high 50s! The house description by Vacasa mentions the walk to the beach but should also include that dogs are NOT allowed on the beach and surrounding dunes. We were stopped by a State Park employee and sternly warned that we could receive a ticket for having our dog with us. We did find a lovely dog friendly beach, Seaside, just about 2 miles north of the house. The house was a perfect size for the 2 plus one dog in our party. It was VERY quiet and peaceful. Loved the close proximity to the large sand dunes right behind the house. The bed is not the most comfortable and it is a bit precarious going up and down the steps if you have to get up in the middle of the night. All in all we had a relaxing time and would stay here again.
Dawn B. Jun 2018
Much larger than expected, pretty much all you need to bring is food and your family. Great way to stay, will never go back to staying in a hotel.
Joshua H. Jun 2018
Very nice and quiet only negative would be the heater that wouldn’t go off lol
Kelsi J. Apr 2018
My partner and I celebrated a quiet romantic getaway! The ocean shore was a quick walk away. The house was clean, organized and welcoming. I appreciated the small decoration details featuring the beach vibes. We were living for the hot tub. It was the perfect close to an easy going day exploring Fort Bragg.
Kathyrn R. Mar 2018
The house was absolutely gorgeous, great amenities, wonderful location next to the dunes. The only downfalls is it's not stocked very well there's no first aid kit, there's hardly any cooking utensils Ie: I had to buy pepper. Overall I would rent from again just knowing to be prepared to stock up in the kitchen area.
Manager response:
We are glad to see this guest enjoyed this beautiful home! We have put a first aid kit in the home as well as salt and pepper shakers. Thank you!
Robert C. Feb 2018
The house was very quiet and comfortable. The location is close to Ft Bragg and beaches.
Rachel F. Jan 2018
Our second night here, lying in bed, my 13 yr old daughter watched a man walk just two feet away from her bedroom window. The person disappeared and we assumed it was a neighbor using a nearby trail behind the houses. Still unsettling. Upon investigating the property in the morning we found a balled up pair of wet men’s underwear on a table near the jacuzzi. Someone knows about the property’s hot tubs and brazenly taking advantage of them. Pretty creepy experience. We knew we couldn’t stay another night with our family as we didn’t feel at all comfortable. Vacasa offered us another rental that unfortunately was a lot more expensive. With the holiday and limited accommodations we took it. After several phone calls with customer service they offered a minimal discount but got us into a new house that night. It would have been nice to have been moved without additional cost for the terrible experience, but alas, we were just happy to not be back at the Sand Dollar.
I highly recommend Vacasa install some security cameras on those properties since they are secluded and someone’s taking advantage.
Manager response:
We are quite sorry to see this guest did not have a more peaceful experience during their visit. We have not had any problems before with people using the hot tub that should not have had access. We have made the owner aware so they can determine if there are any additional security features he would like to add. Due to the busy season our housing options were limited for moving this guest, and we are sorry to see they were not happier with the arrangement. We hope to have another chance to impress!
Vickie T. Dec 2017
When we entered the home it was so warm early check in but we lived to far to get there early the house is all concrete wonderful easy to clean good idea love the washer and dryer to keep towels clean and sheets close to all the fun on flort Bragg so quit nice to listen to the birds and ocean will be back would like a tv in bedroom thanks for having us
Brenda J. Dec 2017
This was our last stop of our 10 day road trip from Sacramento to Washington back down the coast. This was far the best, cleanest and most peaceful place that we stayed. It had everything we needed BBQ, Hot tub and kitchen supplies. A few miles from the best dog friendly beach that our 2 Golden Retrievers absolutely loved!! We will definitely be returning.
Sean, Brenda and our 2 fur babies “Callie & Cassie”.
Antelope California
Laurie H. Nov 2017
This is a lovely cottage, with a great hot tub where you can sit out and watch the fog come over the dunes. A short walk down the road leads to a trail into the dunes and it's about a mile to a wonderful and deserted beach.
Bruce C. Oct 2017
Sand Dollar is worth every penny!
Lynnea B. Oct 2017
A delightful respite close and Far enough from civilization and nature walks. A few unexpected visits from helpers and a few little amenity issues but overall such a kind and Gentile place to spend a restorative week. Thank you to all!
Janine L. Sep 2017
Nice place, would come back in a heartbeat.
Karhlie S. Aug 2017
The house was overall very clean. The house is located about 10 minutes from Fort Bragg. The private beach at the very end of the drive is very pretty and well worth the wait. The house was plenty of space for our 6 guest. The futons were not very comfortable to sleep on, but hey we knew we would be sleeping on futons. The fire pit outside was amazing to sit around in the evening and relax.
Thong L. Aug 2017
This is our first stay at Sand Dollar (family of 4 adults). Other than the need to coordinate bathroom times due to it having only one bathroom, everything else that we need were provided for a comfortable stay.

Clean, comfortable, and cozy.

Wifi signal is woefully inadequate and at times non-existent. So if you are fused at the hip with your smart phone (or have kids who use Wifi a lot), this is a big drawback. But if you are okay with lack of Wifi and are looking to unplug, this is a nice and quiet home away from home.
Carol B. Jul 2017
First thing one notices about this rental is the huge and lovely sand dune right next to the house. It changes color with the light! The house is spacious and has a large lawn, dog run, hot tub, and nicely appointed. Like many rentals, some of the furniture wasn't super comfortable. Concrete floors were easy to keep clean but would have liked a larger rug in the bedroom. There is a trail over the dunes to wild and wonderful Ten Mile Beach. Or, you can drive to the Haul Road or MacKerricher Park. Also driving north to Westport is very scenic.
We met the owner who was very pleasant. Grounds are well kept. We enjoyed watching the wildlife, including families of quail, rabbits, and many birds. We brought our dog who also had a good time! People should be aware that the house is not right in Fort Bragg. The downside is driving time; the upside is very peaceful and quiet.
Bill D. Jul 2017
Great place, will be back!.
Bruce C. Jun 2017
This is Our second stay at Sand Dollar. Will come back as often as possible!
Kyu C. May 2017
So much comfortable and cozy. Warm inside even if it was cold outside.
Lisa M. May 2017
Out of town, great place to relax and let the kids play on the sand dune in the back yard. Be careful of the poison oak on the trail.
Elizabeth P. Apr 2017
This was our 3rd stay here and we weren't disappointed. We love the use of the hot tub at night especially when you can hear the ocean. Very quiet and peaceful place to stay.
Eric G. Jan 2017
Very pleasant and well kept property. Thank you
Lance M. Nov 2016
Great house for a small family. Fun location next to giant sand dunes. Not a lot of bells and whistles but clean and well equipped for family fun.
Jessica I. Aug 2016
This was a great choice. It's pretty private, and fairly close to to beach.
Fred M. Jun 2016
* The GPS guided us to the street and house. Vacasa instructions were helpful.
* The location is about 6 miles from Fort Bragg, CA.
* A little confusion about how to get the car to the back of the garage via the driveway, then park to the left behind the garage.
* The lemon bush branches were a nuisance to get by and get in/out of the entry screen and glass entry door.
* Once past the lemon bush entering the house was impressive, clean and organized.
* The house has a nicely designed floor plan (from front door L-Kitchen, R-Dining area, L-Bathroom, R-Living room, through door into the L-Bed room & R-Table/Chairs, another door to family room).
* The kitchen is fully equipped and ready for cooking foods you bring along.
* Be careful of the different step up-down levels in the bathroom, living room, bedroom and family room. It took some getting used to.
* We noticed a strong mold smell in the family room to the back of the house, but it did not influence the rest of the house or bedroom.
Overall, we would recommend Sand Dollar to our family and friends who wish to vacation at Fort Bragg, CA..
Joseph D. May 2016
We enjoyed our stay at Sand Dollar. The layout of the house is weird, but functional. The kitchen was great and well equipped. The property is very private. The beach is quite a hike, but worth it.
Bruce C. May 2016
For an old camper, it was nice to stay inside a very pleasent cottage. It is very comfortable. I will recommend it and Vacasa's services to all I know.
Jason And Wendy S. Apr 2016
We enjoyed our stay!!!
Carrie C. Mar 2016
Cute place, off the beaten path. Kitchen is beautiful and well stocked with cookware. Decor is very outdated but kind of adds to the charm of the place. Wouldn't recommend staying here if your goal is beach access but for privacy and quiet it's perfect.
Brooklyn S. Feb 2016
Great house with one bedroom. Perfect for small pets, especially the backyard fenced in area.
Geoffrey M. Feb 2016
Great location for quiet and privacy. Very relaxing get away!
Stanley T. Dec 2015
Do not stay at the rental if you want to visit Fort Bragg. It is not in Fort Bragg.
Manager response:
Thank you for sharing your review with us. We are sorry to see if the location of the home came as a surprise to you. This home is located towards the north end of MacKerricher State Park and is approximately 7 miles from the center of Fort Bragg. The address for the home is located towards the top of the page and can be used to locate it on a map. We hope that you were satisfied with the home itself and enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub!
Chenoa T. Oct 2015
Beautiful place! Private and perfect with kids! The sand hill in back makes a perfect play ground for hours! The private beach is breath taking!! The house was so clean and cozy!! I love the sand dollar, I hope to come back and stay longer next time!
Victoria B. Aug 2015
With 4 teenagers, this place was fabulous. We would love to rent this house again, even if it is just the two of us. The house is very private, and the layout makes it nice to put the kids in the other area of the place. Roll up your car windows. We had a raccoon encounter, but it made the experience of nature. We had a blast!
Tiffany F. Mar 2015
This place was private, despite being right next to another rental property. The entrance was behind a garage and was fenced off with lattice. There was an area off the back that was latticed in with grass that was perfect for letting the doggies do their duty. It was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the fire pit! The kids loved climbing and running down the sand dunes that were a short walk down the private road. There were several things that didn't work (hot tub, DVD player, outside lights) and there were only 3 bath towels in a place that advertises 4-6 people (we had 4 so the kids had to share). All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would choose this location again.
