Make Dover your next getaway

Dover is a Mount Snow base first, but the trip does not have to stay on the downhill mountain the whole time. Mix resort days with Timber Creek cross-country skiing, Mount Snow Golf Club, or a low-key walk on The Valley Trail, then save Wilmington, Grout Pond, and Townshend Lake for separate outings.

Plan your Dover getaway

Dover vacation rentals work well for travelers who want Southern Vermont mountain access with a flexible mix of ski days, Nordic trails, golf, casual dining, and nearby forest or lake outings. Families, couples, groups, and winter travelers can plan around Mount Snow Resort, Timber Creek Cross Country Ski Area, Mount Snow Golf Club, and The Valley Trail without turning the stay into a broader Vermont road trip.

As you compare homes, think about whether you want to stay close to Mount Snow, near West Dover dining, or in a quieter setting with space for ski gear and relaxed evenings. Each home is unique, so review listing details for parking, kitchens, pet policies, WiFi, laundry, fireplaces, hot tubs, gear storage, and seasonal access notes before you book.

Things to do in Dover

Looking for things to do in Dover, VT? Start with Mount Snow, then add Nordic skiing, golf, and easy valley paths that make the area useful beyond peak ski season.

Mount Snow Resort

Mount Snow Resort is Southern Vermont’s flagship ski mountain and the main reason many travelers choose Dover, with lift-served terrain and a resort village setting. It’s the core anchor for winter trips, with warm-weather mountain activities giving the resort a role beyond ski season.

Best for:

Timber Creek Cross Country Ski Area

Timber Creek Cross Country Ski Area is a West Dover Nordic ski area where travelers can trade the downhill scene for quieter groomed trails through Vermont woods. It works well for mixed-skill groups, families, or guests who want a lower-key snow day away from the lifts.

Best for:

Mount Snow Golf Club

Mount Snow Golf Club gives summer and fall visitors a named outdoor activity tied to the Mount Snow experience. It’s a good fit for warm-weather and foliage-season trips, especially for groups balancing active plans with relaxed resort-area downtime.

Best for:

The Valley Trail

The Valley Trail is a named Deerfield Valley path connecting Dover and Wilmington, useful for an easy walk or ride without building a full hiking itinerary. It’s a flexible arrival-day or between-plans option for families and travelers who want simple movement close to town.

Where to eat in Dover

Dover dining is best planned around West Dover and the Mount Snow corridor, where après-ski meals, tavern-style restaurants, casual group dinners, and quick resort-area access shape the experience. Nearby downtown Wilmington adds a separate walkable village dining option with cafes, casual restaurants, and browse-around-before-or-after-meal energy.

If you prefer relaxed meals at your rental, check each listing for kitchen setup, dining space, outdoor seating, grill details, and parking. Features vary by home, so confirm the setup that matters most before booking.

The Last Chair Bar and Grill

The Last Chair Bar and Grill is a West Dover après-ski restaurant and bar where groups can land after a Mount Snow day for casual food, drinks, and a mountain-town atmosphere. It’s a useful named dining pick for ski weekends, group dinners, and stays close to the resort corridor.

Dover local tips

Day trips from Dover

Dover makes a practical base for Southern Vermont outings when your group wants lake access, forest trails, Nordic skiing, or a more culture-focused Vermont day. Plan these as separate half-day or full-day trips, and check current road, weather, trail, and operating details before you go.

Grout Pond Recreation Area

Grout Pond Recreation Area is a Green Mountain National Forest site near Stratton with pond access, camping, paddling, and forest trails. It’s a nature-focused day trip for travelers who want a lake-and-woods outing rather than another Mount Snow activity.

Townshend Lake Recreation Area

Townshend Lake Recreation Area is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers site in Townshend with lake access and open-air space for a relaxed Southern Vermont day outside Dover. It works well for families looking for a picnic, shoreline time, or a change of scenery from the mountains.

Prospect Mountain Ski Area

Prospect Mountain Ski Area in Woodford is a Nordic ski destination focused on cross-country skiing and winter trail time. Frame it as a winter day trip for Nordic skiers or mixed groups who want another trail system beyond Timber Creek.

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock adds Vermont conservation history, preserved landscapes, and a cultural day-trip angle to a mountain vacation. Treat it as a fuller regional outing for travelers who want a historic site and classic Vermont village experience outside the Dover area.
