There aren't any shops, grocery stores, or restaurants to speak of. Instead, visitors can spend days admiring the beauty of the heavily wooded southern reaches or the flatter terrain of the north.
That's saying nothing of the vast, placid water of Flathead Lake, which borders the north end of town. Swimming, beachcombing on the rocky shores, and even boating via a small rentals station all make for great ways to pass the time. If the massive size of the lake is intimidating, the much smaller and less crowded Loon Lake lies just to the south.
Be sure to pack your hiking boots - Big Arm has easy access to some breathtaking trails through lush forests. Flathead Lake State Park offers woodland hikes alongside the nearby lake, which provides easy access to fishing and swimming. If you're a fan of bird watching, head to the wetlands of the Pablo National Wildlife Refuge just to the south, where you can spot various waterfowl as you tread through beautiful trails.
Of course, no trip to the area would be complete without a visit to Wild Horse Island. Sitting in the middle of Flathead Lake, this island offers hikes through old-grove Ponderosa Pine forests, picnicking near the lakeshore, and (if you're lucky) a chance to spot one of the island's wild horses.
Even wintertime visitors will love having a vacation rental in the cozy Big Arm community - it's a great home base between trips to the slopes! Blacktail Mountain is just to the northwest, offering an impressive array of ski routes and a lodge with delicious food and fire to warm up.
