Whimsical, unique cottage - unplug & get away from it all!

Don't miss an opportunity for both adventure and relaxation. This Mendocino vacation rental is truly unique, from the tree house to the decor. With more character than an epic novel, this cottage (or hobbit-hole, really) sits on 20 acres of private forested land. Unplug, unwind, and embrace life to the fullest here!

While Bag End is only three miles from the village of Mendocino, trail-filled headlands, and wildlife-teeming beaches, the property itself is super secluded. A short drive on a bucolic road eventually leads you to Patterson's Pub for a pint, Mendocino Market for a sandwich, or any of the other quaint eateries and shops in the village.

If you've spent hours in a book imaging what it would be like to live in The Shire, a stay at this northern California coast cabin might get you part way there. The immediate grounds of the house are meant to be enjoyed. Let the kids play in the tree house or romp around the wooded plot while you and your old pals catch up on the rustic bench circle.

This home, which accommodates four, can be rented along with The Prancing Pony, a neighboring house sleeping three adults and one child. Two groups of traveling friends or two families will be quite lucky to experience these literary-loving locations together.

A spacious deck with gas grill will make it easy to fix a meal for two or eight if you're renting both homes. Just inside the furnished deck is the vibrant grand room.

Unlike the everyday living room that is anchored by a television, this space is digital free. However, it does offer a hook up so you can charge your electric car! The property includes a standard NEMA 14-50 exterior mounted 240 volt outlet for use with electric car chargers. Make sure to bring your charging cable or portable charging unit.

Have a real vacation away from the norm by unplugging and smelling the roses, so to speak. Sit in the cozy living area, rock in a chair with your child on your lap, or gaze through the telescope at your favorite constellation. Play a board game all night long. If you connect with the outside world at all, it might as well be to share pictures of the remarkable decor in this home.

The kitchen is fully stocked and stunning simply to look at. Have your morning coffee (this well-stocked space even offers a bean grinder) on the wind chime-adorned porch as the fog drifts through or take an afternoon snooze on the hammock. Admire the rainbow of wood staining on the cabinetry, a motif that continues into the half bathroom.

In the full bathroom, soak away your cares in the deep tub. A step up from hardwood flooring to the bathtub and stand-alone shower make this room feel substantial and grand. From your bubble bath, you can look out of the huge windows at serene pine tress. This is not your typical bathroom.

A max of four adults will feel quite taken care of here among the two bedrooms, each with a king-size bed. The master has new high-quality mattress, a writing desk, and armchair for reading. For added atmosphere, the bedrooms and bathroom are accessible via a wooden spiral staircase.

There's also a private washer and dryer, so while you'll feel like you're in a faraway place, you'll still have this modern amenity.

If you can get yourself away from this escape, there is so much beauty all within a few miles. In addition to Mendocino's village, Fort Bragg is a laid-back town just a short drive north, and hamlets like Elk, Albion, and Gualala are jaunt to the south. Bodega Bay is about halfway between Mendocino and the San Francisco Bay Area, so if you're coming up from there, it's worth a stop.

Mendocino Headlands State Park is a mere four mile drive away and boasts trails overlooking Big River Beach, a 7,400 acre wildlife corridor. Kayak on Big River itself by renting watercraft from a friendly local business. And, even more small seaside towns along Highway 1 (like Fort Bragg and Bodega Bay) can be visited en route or on the journey home.

Make the most of your precious time off and share in an experience like no other! Gather your loved ones for this Northern California Coast vacation rental soon. A damage waiver, covering up to $2,000 of accidental damage to the property or its contents, is included in the cost of your reservation.

Wonderful quiet away from it all getaway!

Nice quiet and secluded location yet close and convenient to Mendocino and Ft. Bragg. We had a great time for the 4 days we were here and wish we would have stayed here longer on our 10 day trip to California
Michael R. Jun 2019
We absolutely love Bag End! It's our 3rd stay there, and we absolutely love it. Thank you
Martha J. May 2019
I loved this place! We will come again! No internet was a plus!
Laurianne S. May 2019
The house is beautiful, and the grounds are magical! It was such a lovely experience and would love to come back and really enjoy all Bag- ends has to offer. Sons wedding was up in Westport so we weren’t around much.

Thank you for the escape into complete solitude.

This home felt extraordinarily remote, yet was only a short drive to Mendocino. We loved the house and the deck. The master bedroom felt like a magical treehouse. Can't wait to bring our daughter back when she is older and can play on the property.
Elizabeth F. Apr 2019
This is our second visit - we love the location, the home is comfortable and easy to be in, and has everything I need to cook dinner. It's cozy and never feels damp, even though its in the middle of the forest.
Ralph S. Mar 2019
The peace and quiet of this place is just what we were looking for. We plan for a longer stay next time.
Thank You for this cool dome.
Rachel H. Feb 2019
This house is so cute! It's close to the town of Mendocino but down it's own private dirt road. Felt very quiet and peaceful, no neighbors. The house itself is huge and spacious with big comfy beds, huge tub with a view of redwoods. Even stars at night! What else could you ask for?
Aryn E. Dec 2018
My husband, daughter & I just returned from 6 nights at Bag End. This is such a unique & comfortable home. It is well stocked including most of the kitchen items you could need. We made full Christmas Eve & Christmas dinners without difficulty. The house is clean, beds are comfortable and it’s approximately a 10 minute drive to downtown Mendocino. I’d love to return to this home.
Devin C. Nov 2018
We had a great relaxing stay at Bag End. It was so nice to get away to the quiet sounds of nature for a weekend. The home is lovely and the well-provisioned kitchen made it easy to prepare the meals we planned.
Christopher P. Nov 2018
We loved the charm, comfort, and ample open space within this unique home. The quiet, tranquil setting secluded in the redwoods is only minutes from the Mendocino coast. We could not have been any happier with our stay in this clean and well kept home.
Unamarie C. Nov 2018
This unique home had everything; sitting in a redwood forest, within in a few miles of multiple areas of coastal access for walking and photos. Kitchen well supplied an d good grocery store in town. Great patios. Quiet.
Sarah J. Sep 2018
My family and I absolutely loved it here! What a magical place in a beautiful forest but with all the conveniences including a dishwasher. We would love to return!
Marc D. Aug 2018
This architecturally interesting 2 BR/ 2 BA cottage has a huge entertainment room and decks. I've stayed in Mendocino several times, but this one stands out. I will return here again.
Erik Hybschmann K. Jul 2018
Everything we needed and lots of space.
Chandrashekhar B. Jul 2018
Enjoyed the stay again, third year in a row! What a magical place..
Brandon B. Jun 2018
This place is magical! From the private drive up to the property to the attention to detail in the home and around the property. It was beyond our expectations and we can't wait to book this gem again.
Thank you Vacasa. Completely impressed
John B. May 2018
Nice Oriental decor with impressive wall hangings and some large carved chests plus a life sized metal warrior (or Budda/?) Great Bathroom with tub and shower and large windows with view of forest.
Sara M. Apr 2018
It was so cute and cozy. We had such a fun time staying there! Planning on going back for more exploring...
Amanda S. Apr 2018
We loved staying amongst the Redwoods in Bag End. The Lonely Mountain tree fort was a delight for my boys. The stay was so peaceful. Thank you!
Marlena J. Mar 2018
This is our 3rd stay at this cozy and comfortable home. We were used to a much better standard in the previous 2 stays. This time quite a few kitchen items were dirty (spatulas, forks, knives, measuring cup) and by dirty I mean they did not even look like they had been washed at all. New thing too this time around: the water drinking glasses are cheap plastic. There are 5 or 6 wine glasses above the stove but that's it. Hopefully next time, real glasses will be provided.
Manager response:
We are sorry to see the dishes caused such disappointment with this visit. We have done an extra wash on all dishes and asked housekeeping to be more thorough when checking them during their cleaning. Due to the number of broken glasses, we will not be replacing the glassware at this time and will continue with the plastic ones. Thank you!
Robert B. Feb 2018
It is a perfect spot for that mid-week, or weekend get away.
The Mendocino Coast is spectacular, and the privacy, and proximity of Bag End to Mendocino and the Coast is outstanding.
The house resembles landing in Middle Earth and the unique decor is charming and accommodating every need if you decide to be a chef as well as eating at local restaurants.
Personally, we enjoyed the downstairs bedroom which affords an explosion of stars in the picture window that is more difficult to replicate in the master bedroom.
Perfect romantic stay!
Highly recommend for a couple, or extended family and friends.

Amy T. Feb 2018
Perfect, we were very comfortable and happy here. I would love to return.
Jason D. Oct 2017
We loved our stay at the Bag End. Very relaxing.
Diana H. Oct 2017
This place does live up to the hype of other reviews, but I wish someone had told me there was no service. At all. We were stranded at the door of the house for 15 minutes without the lockbox code-- no wifi to check email, or cell service to call the property manager. They do send you an email the morning of with the lockbox code number, be on the lookout for it (VRBO told me it wouldn't be revealed until 4pm, the exact start of the reservation, so I didn't think to check my email before we left).

I called the property company to ask if we could reset the router, and the rep told me "there is no wifi at that house." "..."

There IS definitely a signal, it just cuts in and out as the fairies please, I guess.

Again, the place is one-of-a-kind, and very majestic. I would stay again without any hesitation. Just wish someone had told me no wifi!
Manager response:
We are sorry to see the loss of connection came as a surprise, and we are glad to see the stay was enjoyable despite that!
Heather S. Sep 2017
Our last name is Shire, so finding a hobbit home in "The Shire" to celebrate 20 years was fitting. What a peaceful, quiet spot. It's beautiful!!
Caroline O. Aug 2017
It was like being in your own home.
Had everything one needed for daily life. The kitchen made it easy to cook. Loved the place. A unique experience in a unique place. A radio would have been nice.
Karen M. Aug 2017
We were blown away. The pictures and description really don't do it justice. Special property we hope to visit again.
Jane N. Aug 2017
We loved our stay at Bag End. The home is unique and beautiful and there is always some new detail to see. We definitely want to stay here again.
Rupali B. Jul 2017
We feel at home here....
Randall B. Jul 2017
Very peaceful setting
Eric E. Jul 2017
You a Hobbit House in a private Redwood forest, what more is there to say!
Kathy W. Jul 2017
The cabin was even more appealing in person! A very "Magical" setting deep within the forest, we enjoyed our time here immensely. Very clean, roomy and comfortable!
One disappointment was that the bathtub was off limits-we had a toddler who really needed a bath!
Manager response:
We're sorry the bathtub was out of order during the guest's stay. It has been repaired and in good working order. Thank you.
Ward B. May 2017
Would highly recommend this place to friend and stranger alike. A great spot not too far from the Village.
Katheryn J. May 2017
Quiet and unique place to stay. Loved the bathroom, the large windows made it feel like you were showering amongst the redwoods in the sky.
Terei B. Apr 2017
it was okay
Scott M. Apr 2017
My wife and I started our spring break by spending the weekend at Bag End. As huge Tolkien nerds we truly enjoyed our stay in this charming forest retreat. The Lonely Mountain tree house was very cute and was complete with toy wooden swords for kids to play with. The property is as beautiful as it is tranquil and we would have loved to stay and relax there even longer. We will definitely come back.
Joyce U. Apr 2017
Wonderful location, the cottage is fantastic, well appointed, decor was fabulous and lovely, like staying at a friends house. Very comfortable and charming
Kara S. Apr 2017
My kids said that Bag's End is the best place we've ever stayed! We all loved the unique house and the amazing artwork and collections both inside and out. The forest provided endless opportunities for the kids to explore, and the hammock was a favorite hangout. This property was the perfect home base for explorations up and down the coast! We'd love to come back soon!
Barron S. Mar 2017
Vacasa is top notch when it comes to customer satisfaction. We had a great time in Mendocino and highly recommend Vacasa to anyone who is looking for the perfect vacation getaway.
Ansley L. Feb 2017
This place is amazing - so magical. Very creatively inspiring and warm. Thank you! Will definitely be back.
Jordan G. Feb 2017
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend here. What a unique and lovely spot! Can't wait for our next weekend getaway!
Robert O. Feb 2017
Bag End is a spacious house with big comfortable furnishings. The eclectic artifacts from a variety of religious traditions lend beauty and conversation. The deep forest setting is in fact very close to the village. Ideal for a sunny day or a rainy one.
Christina V. Feb 2017
This was the most intriguing and comfortable home we have ever had the joy of staying at. It is virtually buried in the forest and has unique and artsy decor inside and out. We cannot wait to go back.
Marilyn T. Dec 2016
Delightful place. Perfect for a quiet, companionable family weekend.
Asher F. Nov 2016
Perfect escape to a very well curated space, can't wait to visit again.
Bonnie R. Nov 2016
We stayed at Bag End and would have loved to have been there longer!
It is located on a very private and quiet property surrounded by redwood forest. Each morning, we would see dear right outside! The house is fully equipted with everything you might need. We look forward to returning in the future.
Dobie E. Oct 2016
Bag End is unique among places we have stayed. It is spacious and of an unusual design. All the furnishing are of very high quality, the mattresses excellent, water pressure great, and appliances easy to use. This house is full of exceptional Asian art and cabinets, clearly chosen by someone with knowledge and love for the cultures which the art and furnishings represent. The design, decor, and decoration in Bag End are sophisticated, colorful and delightful. The garden around the house is beautiful, too, and we hope to return in the spring and early summer when it is not raining so we can use the outdoor area. Thank you for making Bag End available!
Caitlin O. Oct 2016
A very unique and beautiful rental!
Deborah M. Oct 2016
I found this to be an ideal spot for a private, one-person meditation retreat. The house is so beautiful -- one wants to just sit outside in the front and gaze at the house and the forest for hours. Indoors the house is beautiful as well, colorful and has a natural, rustic feel -- as one would expect of a geodesic dome house built in the woods! The house has character and soul but all the trim and fixtures look in tip-top condition, as if built yesterday.

The quiet and peace to be found here were so healing! There was plenty of space in the great room to do yoga and to sit and meditate, while looking out the window to the forest. The great room is so large, that one gets a lovely sense of spaciousness just by walking around in it! A marvelous peace settled over me as I spent time in this home, and took a bath while gazing out at the tall pine trees. It was a heavenly experience. Silence pervades the area, and while staying at the property, the only other individuals I saw there were 4-5 crows/ravens flying through the trees, and one banana slug on the front porch.
When I walked down the road for an evening walk, I only saw two other people along the road, in 1.5 hours. Yet the house is so close to town , if anything is needed, and also close to several great hiking areas I was able to enjoy, such as Mendocino Headlands, Spring Ranch, and Mendocino Woodlands State Park. I left feeling delightfully nourished by the beauty, silence and tranquility!
Roger T. Oct 2016
Beautiful property. Secluded and private. Comfortable. Feels like home.
Philip S. Oct 2016
Spent a week here in early October 2016. Property is about 3-4 miles from the village of Mendocino up winding country roads. Driving these roads at the posted (and advisable) speeds means a casual trip to the house for convenience -- say, after a state park and before dinner -- can add a half-hour round-trip to central Mendocino village dinner plans. I loved the isolation but others may find it a little inconvenient.

Redwood views are especially beautiful from upstairs. The furniture and beds are comfortable and the kitchen appliances are new or in good repair.

One is greeted by multiple signs in and out demanding "no shoes in house", which, for double-carpeted floors I found a bit cheeky to demand without disclosing in advance. It's requested that all shoes will stay outside the house, so presumably animals/bugs/sogginess in your shoes are just part of the deal. How is that supposed to work when unloading groceries and luggage?

House is sited on a beautiful lot over a gorge of second-growth redwoods. There is no TV and while wifi is advertised as unavailable, the landline phone was connected through a DSL filter. So the house is obviously connected, it's just not supported for renters.

There was a request for me to take out garbage bins to the street but no indication where I might find the outdoor garbage bins. I never did find them -- fortunately I also generated very little waste. This, however, was quite confusing against the mention of local bear activity in the house guide. What would I have done if I'd eaten every meal in the house? Leave my shoes outdoors next to bags of garbage and hope no bears visit?

Temps ranged from 48-50F overnight up to 78F midday -- the sun-exposed side of the house (none of whose windows, perplexingly, open at all) heated up above 80F as indicated by the thermostat although central A/C didn't work. The only way to get airflow in the house was by throwing all downstairs doors open, which doesn't help the bathroom upstairs where some of my toiletries actually melted due to greenhouse effect in the main bathroom (great views, almost unbearably hot 10AM-6PM because windows don't open but do let in direct sun). Bath also not possible to use during daytime except with sunglasses and SPF40.

One extremely and unnecessarily frustrating experience I had was after forgetting a jacket at my hotel in SF I called to have it overnighted (UPS) to the Bag End house address. When I called Vacasa they told me the owner said no packages can be delivered to the house, they will all be returned as undeliverable, with no advice on where to pick the package up. No sooner had Vacasa told me this than I found a Casper mattress box with the home's address piled up on a porch, obviously recently delivered. But by then I'd already UPS change the delivery instructions and I had to chase my express package across Ukiah and Ft. Bragg UPS depots, which cost me a day of phone tag and unnecessary wild goose chase to Ft. Bragg, where UPS told me they deliver to this house's road all the time. Why lie about that? It ended up costing me a half day from my vacation between the calls and the drive, and the misrepresentation left a really bad taste in my mouth.

The fact that the property chooses not to support 21st Century connectivity conventions and emergency courier deliveries -- by policy if not as true infrastructural constraints -- means I would not stay again.

Overall a charming property, well located and well decorated and in good condition. If you arrive during daylight, carefully leave lots of outdoor lights on for returns after dark, and spend all daylight outdoors / out of the house, the lack of interior airflow and 5mph dirt road location are non-issues. I wouldn't stay again personally out of personal preference but it's a perfectly good house and good value, particularly if you know the house rules and its limitations up front.

Manager response:
We are sorry to read about so many disappointments involved with this reservation. Vacasa can pick up trash if needed, or guests can take trash to the trash bins at the end of the road as listed in the home's information book. Due to the white carpets we do ask that guests leave their shoes off, and we will do our best to make sure guests are aware of this request prior to arrival. Internet is not listed as an amenity as it is spotty at best and we do not want guests to rent this home planning on having that amenity full-time during their stay. Again, we apologize that this stay was not more enjoyable.
Martina D. Oct 2016
Last year we stayed at the other house on this property and we are just as happy this year year. The bag end is spacious and interesting (furniture and decoration from around the world) and as with the other house the kitchen is stocked perfectly!!!! There is nothing you can't make in this kitchen. Great knifes and enough pots and pans, baking dishes and measuring cups...just bring food and start cooking! My kids are 7 and 4 and they were entertained the whole time. From playing in the little cute treehouse to swordfighting with the little wooden swords they have there. A favorite is still the garden! I think my kids ate at least 4 apples a day, and they always came back with blue mouths from the huckleberry bushes. They also have great games at the house. One thing i want to mention again is how clean the house is, i think a big part of it has to do with the no shoes in the house sign but eveything else just felt clean and tidy. It's just a very peaceful place surrounded by nature and we made even more amazing memories there this year. We will be back for sure!!
Leslie D. Oct 2016
We really enjoyed our stay at Bag End--the setting is beautiful, private and deep in nature. The interior of the house is also lovely and spacious. The mattress in the main upstairs bedroom, however, is terrible, which is a shame, because that room is far superior to the downstairs room off the kitchen.
Manager response:
We are so happy that you had a chance to stay with us and experience this gem of a home. We are also happy to let you know that the mattress in the upstairs bedroom has been replaced! We hope to have you back and thank you for choosing Vacasa.
Chris M. Sep 2016
Beautiful, craftsmanbuilt, comfortable, clean, well appointed, quiet serene. If you want a meditative, zen place in the redwood forest of Mendocino, this is the place for you!
Jane & Steve S. Sep 2016
Bag End is truly an amazing house! Artfully put together and well supplied with soaps, shampoos, and anything you need in the kitchen. Towels are thick and comfy and If you want tranquility and getting away from it all - this is the place. We stayed at the end of August and the weather was perfect for sitting on the large, sunny deck. Not sure you can do that in the winter. The living room has large comfy sofas and chairs which are great for lounging and/or reading.

Take a walk around the property and you will find some hidden surprises among the trees.

Our only complaint is the mattresses which are not conducive to a good night's sleep. Hopefully, the owners will replace them soon.

Manager response:
We definitely agree with your assessment of the home and thank you for sharing your feedback. We took what you said to heart and have replaced the mattress with a brand new one!
David N. Sep 2016
Charming little hippy hobbit hole, just 5 minutes drive from Mendo.
Todd L. Aug 2016
The place is great, location is wonderful, thoughtfully appointed with everything you need, I can't wait to return!
Ayna B. Aug 2016
The house is beautiful and had everything we needed. The location is perfect-- close to downtown Mendocino but surrounded by trees. It was quiet and relaxing, and we really enjoyed our time. The only shower/ bath is upstairs for people who have difficulty with stairs.
Denise B. Aug 2016
Beautiful secluded property, main part of the house much larger than expected, beds very comfortable, kitchen fairly well appointed.
Shamsi M. Jul 2016
From the artfully carved out tops of the posts on the main gate to the tiny custom wooden nail and screw covers, to the fun brightly colored walls, you can tell the love and detail that went into building this cabin. Truly a unique experience on an amazing piece of property in one of the most scenic parts of California . We cannot wait to go back! Thank you for sharing your wonderful home. S.

The most Interesting place we have ever stayed

me and my beautiful lady spent a magical weekend at Bag end. Best weekend ever!!! we did venture around mendocino and the first night ate at the wild fish ( best seafood, down little river) but spent most of our time at bag end. the property has a great edible garden where you can pick berries and in front of the house there's a hammock in the middle of a redwood Grove. beautiful place to be with some one you love.
Katherine M. May 2016
My fiance and I decided to take a long weekend and drive up the PCH from the Bay Area, and Bag End was absolutely the most perfect place to stay and get away from it all! We enjoyed a couple of meals in Mendocino and some local hikes, but actually ended up spending most of our weekend drinking tea, reading and enjoying the space at this magic home among the trees! We felt totally at home and appreciated everything about the place, and we hope to come back again sometime in the not-too-distant future.
Nathan D. Apr 2016
A wonderful house on beautiful property.
Giulia H. Apr 2016
Loved this hideaway and would definitely make the journey west to stay here again.
Shekhar B. Apr 2016
Wonderful place
James M. Mar 2016
Great place to stay surrounded by beautiful redwoods and master bedroom in "the tower" was pretty cool
Fiona H. Feb 2016
My family and I loved staying here - we actually extended our vacation by an extra night since we were having such a great time. It's so relaxing and quiet, and the house was very clean and well stocked. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful and restful vacation!
David H. Feb 2016
We loved this home! It was magical and warm and so full of interesting, eclectic touches. It was an awesome balance between a fantasy/Tibet/LOTR inspired vacation spot with a very clean, functional and well appointed space. The grounds are also lovingly funky, with references to LOTR and Middle Earth. It wonderfully quiet and felt remote. A very unique cabin in the woods, while still only a 10 minute drive from downtown Mendocino.
Colin S. Jan 2016
We had an amazing time at Bag End. This place is the real-deal. Tranquilly located far enough away from town, yet not too far to make the trek.
Kimberlee S. Nov 2015
We were very happy with our stay at Bag End. The home was very welcoming and very well appointed. We felt as though we were staying in someone's home rather than a rental. We found the home to perfectly secluded yet easily accessible to town. We were happy with the absence of TV, yet the addition of wi-fi was a unexpected surprise. We would return to Bag End in a heartbeat.
Christopher M. Oct 2015
Charming, comfortable, peaceful, eclectic, artistic, larger than the pictures would indicate, we loved our stay.
Vanessa D. Aug 2015
This was a great house. Plenty of room and very comfortable. It was like an escape from reality.
Brian G. Aug 2015
Really cool place. Very clean and well stocked. Close enough to town, but stills feels remote. Gorgeous lot.
