Charming cottage right on the waterfront on Drake's Island

Enjoy your next getaway in true East Coast fashion at this charmingly rustic Wells vacation rental. Up to four of your family or friends can stay here and all will adore having home essentials along with a great waterfront location to admire from the spacious deck.

Stacked on pilings right in the marsh, watch the tide roll in and out beneath the house. Drake's Island Beach is one mile away, making it the perfect distance to ride bikes to. The main hub of town is also not far for quick and easy outings.

Bursting from the core with natural wood floors, ceilings, and walls, and furnished just right, you'll feel relaxed and right at home. Numerous windows let natural light seep through the windows and allow you to take in the picturesque bay views.

The main house is open and makes visiting with fellow travelers possible no matter what activity you choose to do. Settle onto the futon to watching a show on the flatscreen cable TV, pull out your laptop or phone to stream music and post photos of your incredible views using the WiFi, or walk over to the dining table to play a game of cards.

There are plenty of seats around the wood table to enjoy sit-down meals together, and having a kitchen makes that a reality each and every day. Don't let the quaintness of the kitchen fool you - a full-size refrigerator, oven/stove top, microwave, coffeemaker, and toaster are all included. All you need to do is bring along fresh ingredients!

One full bathroom with a shower is located in the main house. Across the deck is the second part of the house, which is made up of an inviting bedroom, vintage sofa, and a stunning decorative stained glass door. With the queen-size bed and the main house futon, up to four guests can sleep comfortably each night.

Wells is a great place to vacation with its historic charm dating back to 1643. Walk or ride your bike down to the beach to splash in the water and beachcomb. Other beaches within a short drive are Wells Beach and Oguniquit Beach. Wells Harbor offers kayak and paddleboard rentals, or walk around the area to browse antique shops and grab a bite to eat. Kennebunkport is about five miles northeast, has beautiful beaches, and is home to the Bush Family Compound at Walker's Point. You might get lucky enough to catch a glimpse of it on a drive by.

Immerse yourself in the culture of the East Coast from this rustically charming Maine vacation home.

The marsh preserve is such a beautiful scene to watch, it totally made this vacation. The whole family really liked the separate buildings and everything was very clean and well designed (the kitchen sink is amazing!). My other favorite thing was the reading material provided: Martha Stewart Entertaining circa 1982 (a classic) and vintage Architectural Digests from the ‘90s. So good! Drakes Isalnd beach is walkable, you can kayak from the house at high tide, and the parking is not as far away as they make it seem. A fabulous vacation spot!

Rustic charm and very well stocked! Very clean!

Such a cozy summer spot! An outside shower would have been our only wish. Overall had an amazing experience and would love to return again!

Definitely not for everyone but for us the location, the views and the relaxing quiet were well worth the inconvenience of the bathroom being in a different building from the bedroom and low water pressure in the shower.

The house is located a short bike ride or walk from Drake's Island beach which has beautiful sand and is very "non-commercial". The wildlife on the saltmarsh was fun to watch and the sunsets from the deck were incredible! It was a great place to relax. I could go on and on about how much me and my family loved the Artist Shack, but I think I'd run out space allotted for this review.

We all loved its sense of seclusion from the every day life.

Location, very unique cleanliness excellent. Bed very uncomfortable
Danna G. Oct 2020
Loved the views from every window, the rustic wood interior - the proximity to Drakes Island beach and Rachel Carlson Preserve - we will be back!

My husband and I spent 5 nights at the "Artist shack". The house is very close to the beach however is located on a very busy road during "peak" months. The futon and master bed were EXTREMELY uncomfortable. We both woke up every morning with a sore back and stiff neck (were only in our 30's). Television is set so high up on the entertainment center that your neck is tilted all the way back just to watch it. The showers water pressure is NOTHING and that of comparison to a "garden hose". For someone with thick, long hair (myself) taking a shower was horrendous and extremely frustrating. As a safety concern, the light switch cover controlling the "chandeliers" in the living room/kitchen become very hot to the touch after only 15 minutes when the dimmer is turned up. Very concerning as a potential fire hazard and another guest commented on this back in 2016... We would have considered renting again in the coming year(s) but not unless the master bed, shower, and television setup is updated.
Manager response:
Hi, Shayla! We appreciate your feedback and are sorry to read you had any complaints. There is a new property manager who will be sure to address your concerns when the home is reopened in the spring. Thank you!

Views! Deer, birdwatching, cozy and unique place, close to everything!

Considering the COVID scare we expected a deep clean. Surface cleaning was done, but the very aged utensils, pots, pans, oven grate, old futon cover and old bed cover all should have been thrown away years ago. Utensils, oven pans and toaster had old caked on food. Old bottles of cooking oil, vinegar, salt and pepper shakers, etc. should not be shared! The entire deck needs a good power wash. The closet on the deck was so filthy inside that I quickly closed it! Musty, moldy smell was through out the cottages. Mold in the grout on the bathroom floor. We are both getting COVID test this week. Numerous nail heads popped up on the pine floors. Could cause cuts if barefoot. It's a shame, otherwise it has a lot of charm, very private and great location.
Manager response:
Thank you for choosing to book with us! We are sorry to hear the home did not meet your expectations upon arrival, and we apologize for any frustration caused by these concerns. Since your stay in the home, our maintenance staff has repaired the deck and the floors, and the home has had a deep clean so future guests should not encounter these issues. We appreciate your feedback, and we hope to have the chance to impress you in the future!

I loved that the deck was nestled between the two buildings. I slept on the deck one of those nights.

We loved the location. Really nothing like it. Saw a bald eagle fly around the cabin on the 1st morning! Several herons, sandpipers, kingfisher all frequented the outside. Room layout is quirky with the 2 sections separating the sleeping and living quarters (with bath). Overall we were statified. Bath is modern and well kept. Water pressure VERY low. Water was hot. The cabins do not have a heating system. Electric oil-filled radiators were provided. They were sufficient until it got below 32 degrees at night. Plenty of sunlight in the day kept it warm enough. Parking is about 90 steps along the road from the entrance gate. Sufficient, safe and adequate. Bring flashlights or headlamps! Sunrise over trees from window. Tides come in and out through estuaries. Low traffic this time of year. A very unique, quirky and eclectic experience. In slightly warmer weather we would love to do this again. Enjoy!

Although parking was an issue, it was close to the beach and a cozy place to come back to. It’s a great cottage for a couple over a long weekend.

My husband and I stayed at Artist Shack for three nights in June. This place is cool and quirky but not for everyone. Here's what was great: the VIEW is quite beautiful and serene, how many places can you catch both lovely sunrises and sunsets; it's very clean; the decor is cool and nicely done; lounge chairs on the deck were welcome and nice grill; loft is neat if you have kids or are adventurous. Here's what we didn't love so much: not obvious from the photos is that you are on a busy main road; you have to walk down that busy road from where you'll park; the sleeping area is separate from the rest of the house... cool but not for everyone because if you need to get up in the night to use the bathroom you have to go out on the dock and back in (only a few steps with a flashlight but odd); I didn't love the kitchen but the grill is a nice touch; the signs up from the management company seem a little commercial and take away from the homey feel; lastly we are bird-watchers and there were surprisingly few birds...perhaps in early fall on shorebird migration.

This is a truly unique experience. My husband and I really enjoyed having coffee on the deck in the morning and watching the tide come in under the house. Luckily I had read other reviews before booking and was aware of it's location to a main road which was fine with us. If you're looking for a cookie cutter place, with matching curtains, napkins, pillows and all that then this might not be the place for you but if you want a laid back, eclectic and unique places surrounded by wildlife, nature beauty and the amazement of tides then you should definitely come here. The only thing I wish we had was kayaks so we could explore the marsh.
Debra B. Sep 2017
This is a quirky property. The title marsh is brimming with bird life which I loved. There are two easels available for the painters. The kitchen is very awkward, as is the bedroom so far from the bathroom , but that's the nature of the property, quirky. The queen bed was a little uncomfortable we slept on the futon and were fine. We are seriously thinking about going back next year. It was very nice
Lisa S. Aug 2017
My teens and I stayed here one night... wish it could have been longer. I recommend getting up as early as possible to watch the birds in the salt marsh. After our nine day road trip around Maine and Vermont, this was voted our favorite accommodation. Will definitely be back!

Can't believe this place isn't 100% booked all the time. It's a great location with a unique property. While it's not for everyone, it's character and charm are immeasurable.
Judd G. Sep 2016
What a great place! A nice quiet spot in a very busy Southern Maine with great views of the marsh. Will definitely stay again!

Fabulous location - short walk/bike ride to Drake Island Beach - unique cottage - loved it!

We just returned from a very nice week at the Artist Shack. This property is adorable and clean. Although located on a busy road, the gated entrance and large enclosed deck between the two buildings overlooking the salt marsh, make the property feel private and secluded. The deck has nice lounge chairs, cushioned outdoor furniture and a small fridge. There is a table with an umbrella but the table is falling apart and unusable.
Inside, there's a large table with several wooden chairs, and a small kitchen. The living area, although spacious, has just one futon couch for seating, making it difficult to accommodate more than two people comfortably.
Beyond the necessary items I feel are missing from the kitchen, like, no cooking utensils, mixing or serving bowls, drying towels... and the bathroom without a toilet paper holder, towel rack and (annoying misfitting toilet seat, the cottage also isn't supplied with any books, games, movies (or DVD player).
Obviously these aren't necessities, but you'll need to pack your own if you want them - We did find a "used stuff" shop next to the IGA
(that's also an animal adoption shelter wih lots of cute cats to play with????) and they have some fun items for little money.
Because the bedroom is in a separate building from the kitchen/living area and bathroom, it does require walking outside and across the deck in order to use the bathroom at night. ????
The loft is accessed outside up a set of wooden stairs off the deck and is located in an attic type room above the bedroom. Although spacious, an adult would be unable to stand while in it.
The beach is a 15+ minute walk. We didn't mind walking, but suggest using a cart to transport beach items. Also, this is a heavily traveled, very narrow road without sidewalks, walking it with children and beach gear could be difficult. There is parking closer to the beach ($20 per day) however, most days the lot was filled by 10am.
All in all its a very nice place, and with a few

Manager response:
We are happy to see that this stay was mostly positive. The owner has placed extra silverware, cooking utensils, and bowls in the home for guest use. Maintenance will soon have the table repaired, towel rack installed, toilet paper holder installed, and the toilet seat tightened down.
