This is Peaks Island, a tranquil island neighborhood within the confines of Maine's largest city and a quiet respite from its bustling commercial port. Go for beautiful strolls, ride bikes, or kayak through Casco Bay, and retreat to the simple pleasures of life with our Peaks Island vacation rentals.

Where is Peaks Island, ME?

Approximately two miles long and one mile wide at its broadest point, Peaks Island is one of more than 200 islands speckled throughout Casco Bay near the shores of downtown Portland. With a population of barely 1,000 year-round residents, the island is a 20-minute ferry ride from Portland on Casco Bay Lines, which operates as many as 14 daily departures depending on the season. You'll also be just four miles east of Portland's Old Port and 12 miles north of the lighthouses and beaches on Cape Elizabeth.

Things to Do on Peaks Island, ME

Once known as Maine's version of Coney Island and a strategic outpost during World War II, Peaks Island is now a relaxing refuge for Portlanders and summer vacationers. Your first stop? Picking up a set of wheels from Brad's Bike Rental & Repair to help you circumnavigate the island in less than 20 minutes.

Begin each morning with decadent cinnamon rolls at Peaks Cafe, and spend leisurely afternoons exploring the island's history and beauty. Hop on board a golf cart or take a fascinating walk with Peaks Island Tours, or join a half-day or day-long excursion through the islands with Maine Island Kayak Co. Pop in and out of the galleries on Island Avenue, treat yourself to an ice cream cone at Down Front, and learn a bit of local lore at the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum.

Should stormy skies move in, there's no better place to pass the rain than the Umbrella Cover Museum - a one-of-a-kind facility dedicated to the art and whimsy of the humble umbrella sleeve.

Day Trips from Peaks Island, ME

Thanks to a car ferry (in addition to passenger ferries) that frequently serves the island, our Peaks Island vacation rentals are ideal for day-trippers looking to explore the greater Portland region.

Head 21 miles north to Freeport, where you'll find both the flagship store of L.L. Bean and the gorgeous trails and nesting shorebirds at Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park. To the south, you can admire an iconic view of the Portland Head Light just beyond South Portland, a series of classic Maine scenes within Two Lights State Park, and the sterling shores of Crescent Beach State Park on Cape Elizabeth.

But you need only cross Casco Bay to taste world-class culinary creations in downtown Portland, which include the handcrafted breads and pastries at Standard Baking Co., the brown butter lobster roll at Eventide Oyster Co., and the heavenly Belgian-style fries and poutine at Duckfat.
