Make Salem your next getaway

Tucked into the remote northwestern corner of South Carolina in the Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area, Salem is one of the Southeast's best-kept outdoor secrets. This small mountain community sits at the edge of Lake Jocassee — named by National Geographic as one of the world's 50 last great places — where crystal-clear mountain water, hidden waterfalls accessible only by boat, rare wildflowers, and world-class trout fishing create an experience of pure, unspoiled Appalachian beauty.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this condo. It was very clean and had a lovely view of the lake. Our communication with the owner was very good and everything was ready for our use. We were getting together with family for Easter and it was the ideal location.

We stayed for three weeks while visiting our daughter at Clemson. The condo was perfect! New and updated with great use of the space. Neighbors were super nice. It felt like home! There were so many amazing amenities and we took full advantage. My husband golfed, we did water aerobics, yoga and lots of walks with our dog as well. Thanks for letting us stay!!

What you'll love about Salem

Lake Jocassee is the centerpiece, and it's extraordinary with 7,500 acres of turquoise mountain water with a protected wilderness shoreline, hidden waterfalls accessible only by boat, and a clarity that makes it one of the finest freshwater dive sites in the Southeast.

Devils Fork State Park is the only public access point, and the rare Oconee Bell wildflower bloom along its nature trail is one of the Southeast's most remarkable and brief seasonal spectacles. The Jocassee Gorges Wilderness, the Foothills Trail, and the wild Chattooga River complete a natural landscape that National Geographic has called one of the world's last great places.

Lake Jocassee: the Southeast's most beautiful secret

Salem is one of the Southeast's most extraordinary and least-known outdoor destinations — sitting at the edge of Lake Jocassee, whose turquoise waters, hidden waterfalls, and protected wilderness shoreline earned it a place on National Geographic's list of the world's last great places.
