The famous South by Southwest music festival, which takes place in March, is the largest one of its kind in the world. With over 2,000 acts and 28,000 attendees, there's something for everyone to enjoy. It's not just the festival, though - Austin's official motto is "The Live Music Capital of the World," a title the city thoroughly earns. There are more than 250 music venues in the city, and a wide variety of genres can be found on any given night.
The visual and performing arts are well represented here too. Tour the Blanton Museum of Art on the University of Texas campus, or browse through the Yard Dog Gallery. Make sure to check the schedule for the Bass Concert Hall, so you can catch your favorite play or musical as it comes through town.
If you want to get away for an afternoon, there are plenty of great options near Austin. Visit one of the wineries in Wimberly, or book a tour and try several in the area. While you're in Wimberly, stop at Pioneer Town, a recreation of an Old West town, for some local history.
With plenty of family-friendly activities and one of the best Oktoberfests outside of Europe, the stunning geography and rich history of Fredericksburg are only 80 miles away. Learn about the history of the German settlers of the city, or enjoy modern entertainments like the Fritztown Cinema.
Take a jaunt over to Lago Vista, with its many parks and nature trails. Watch the migration of the monarch butterflies, or look for foxes in the bushes along the path. Lago Vista has excellent restaurants - take the opportunity for dinner at Haven on the Lake, with its gorgeous view of the water.
