Ten years ago, our family of 22 gathered at The Quintessa for a full week to celebrate my grandmother’s 80th birthday. This year, we returned—this time as a group of 10—renting the Upper House to celebrate her 90th. Coming back after a decade felt both nostalgic and reaffirming: The Quintessa was just as perfect for our needs as we remembered. The spacious kitchen quickly became the heart of the home, allowing several of us to prepare traditional family dishes at the same time with ease. It was thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed, making cooking together a joy rather than a challenge. Mornings and evenings were filled with laughter over board games in the breakfast nook, while the living room became our gathering place for storytelling, reminiscing, and reconnecting. We especially appreciated the ability to share family photos on the TV above the fireplace—an easy, modern touch that brought generations of memories to life. Later in the evenings, we watched cherished home movies that my grandmother brought along, using the DVD player in the master bedroom, which added another layer of sentimentality to the week. Despite being on Whidbey Island, the location made it entirely feasible to plan a day trip into Seattle. We all loaded up, attended a fundraiser hosted by my cousin, and returned in time to cook and enjoy dinner together back at The Quintessa—a perfect balance of outing and home-centered relaxation. The expansive backyard gave us space to unwind outdoors, whether strolling and noticing the vibrant primroses and first buds forming on the fruit trees or simply enjoying the fresh air together. We could only imagine how stunning the rhododendrons and peonies must be in full bloom during the spring. We are deeply grateful to have a place like The Quintessa to mark our family’s most meaningful milestones. It continues to be a setting where memories are not just revisited—but made anew.
