Great rental with easy access to all of SD!
Chris S. | Oct 2025
We really enjoyed being able to walk out front and have the grandkids play in the sand. Being able to walk to the oceanside was also a plus. The condo was very comfortable and having a washer/dryer was a plus. With our group of 6, we had to rent a larger vehicle and parking was very hard to find each night but we knew this ahead of time. All the great attractions were close enough and driving only took about 15 minutes.

The home was great with an amazing central location, in a quiet and safe neighborhood. We enjoyed the home very much and the entire experience and amenities were fantastic. A couple of minor notes: the listing says that the home has twin bunk beds in one of the bedrooms, but it is actually a twin with a trundle bed underneath. The wifi is slow, so you may want to download videos to your devices before your trip.

The San Diego basics for first-timers

The weather (spoiler: it's perfect)

San Diego averages 266 sunny days and a blissful 72°F year-round. Summers run 75–85°F. Winters rarely dip below 55°F. Pack a light layer for evenings near the water.

Best time to visit

September and October offer warm skies, smaller crowds, and lower rates on vacation rentals. Summer is peak season. Spring bursts with wildflowers. Winter is ideal for whale watching and budget travelers.

Getting around

A car offers the most flexibility. Rideshare apps are widely available. The MTS Trolley covers downtown and the border. For beach-hopping, e-bikes and scooters skip the parking headaches entirely while making your trip more enjoyable.

Getting here

San Diego International Airport (SAN) sits minutes from our downtown rentals. Most U.S. cities offer direct flights. From Los Angeles, it's a scenic two-to-three-hour drive down I-5 along the coast.

Best neighborhoods for San Diego lodging

Most scenic: La Jolla

Cliffside glamour meets coastal charm. Upscale boutiques, world-class restaurants, sea caves, and the Children’s Pool seal colonies seal the deal. Best for couples and luxury travelers.

Explore vacation rentals in La Jolla >

Best for families: Mission Bay & Mission Beach

The ultimate family playground: calm bay waters for paddleboarding, a classic boardwalk, and Belmont Park's vintage roller coaster. Vacation rentals in Mission Beach here have direct bay or beach access.

San Diego beach guide for travelers

Coronado Beach

Vibe: Iconic · Romantic · Pristine

Wide, uncrowded, and flanked by beauty, Coronado ranks among America's best beaches. The golden sand shimmers, and skyline views at sunset are absolutely breathtaking.

Best for: Couples and wedding groups

La Jolla Cove

Vibe: Dramatic · Wildlife-Rich · Scenic

A protected cove of rugged cliffs and sea caves. Crystal-clear waters draw snorkelers and divers. Harbor seals lounge nearby. The surrounding bluffs are among Southern California's most photographed views.

Best for: Snorkelers and nature lovers

Pacific Beach & Mission Beach

Vibe: Lively · Social · Energetic

These back-to-back boardwalk beaches are the epitome of beach culture with volleyball nets, fire pits, food trucks, and surf shops—all creating an atmosphere that feels like a permanent, sun-soaked beach party.

Best for: Young travelers and beach party lovers

Ocean Beach

Vibe: Bohemian · Dog-friendly · Authentic

OB, as locals call it, has kept its counterculture spirit for decades. Here's where to find the longest dog-friendly beach in San Diego, plus the beloved pier, antique shops, and the fantastic Saturday farmers market.

Best for: Dog owners and bohemian spirits

Encinitas & Leucadia

Vibe: Surf town · Relaxed · Earthy

Located 25 miles north of downtown, Encinitas has the feel of a small surf town where time moves a little slower. Swami's surf break draws serious surfers, while the Self-Realization Fellowship gardens offer a meditative pause above the sea cliffs.

Best for: Surfers and wellness seekers

Del Mar & Torrey Pines

Vibe: Upscale · Serene · Scenic

Del Mar blends a charming village and a beautiful beach backed by coastal bluffs. Just north, Torrey Pines State Beach stretches wild and largely undeveloped beneath rare pine-topped cliffs.

Best for: Hikers and upscale relaxation

Carlsbad State Beach

Vibe: Quiet · Family-friendly · Unhurried

Further up the coast, Carlsbad offers calm, less-crowded stretches ideal for families and those who prefer their ocean views without the soundtrack of a packed boardwalk. Nearby LEGOLAND makes this a natural base for families with young children.

Best for: Families with young children

Iconic San Diego experiences beyond the coast
