We visited the area for our son's graduation from Boot Camp at MCRD, the location was fantastic (about 6 miles from base) and every single person I spoke with at Vacasa was professional and very helpful. We had to make some last minute changes to our reservation and they were very accommodating!!
We had a wonderful time and very much enjoyed our stay at the Big Kahuna!!!
It was a great house to stay in with our family for our reunion! It accommodates everyone comfortably.
This house was the perfect size, we fit 6 adults and 3 children and the house never felt small. We spent the holidays here and had a lovely time, I would definite recommend this place!
This was a nice, clean house with lots of bedrooms and bathrooms, very close to the beach.
Wish they had more staples in the kitchen (such as oil), but overall a great place!
Great location. Close to the beach and the bay. Very roomy and nice inside
Our family had a great stay at the Big kahuna. The place is nicely furnished and well-equipped and the bedrooms were all a little larger than may be expected from the pictures. The Vacasa provided all the information we needed with no hassle. We would definitely stay here again .
Was in town for a conference with two fellow coworkers. This home was perfect for our group as we each had a large bedroom with our own bathroom. Kitchen was well equipped and living room furniture was very comfortable. Beds were also comfortable for a good night's sleep. Would return.
The location, space and comfort of beds.
Much closer to the beach than we expected! Lots of yummy restaurants, and surf rental shops in walking disntace. Plenty of room for our family.
Lots of stairs so not recommended for someone who can’t do stairs well, it made it a little hard with crawling babies but there was a baby gate provided.
Great Location. Super close to the beach and all sorts of restaurants.
Nice setting and large place for our family of 7, including one young baby. Strongly recommend.
Excellent place to stay and only 1 minute from the beach
Our group of 10 really enjoyed our weekend in Mission. The place was clean, comfortable, spacious, and just a few steps from the beach. The Vacasa team was extremely helpful, and checking in and out was simple. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!
We had a group of 10 girls stay at the beach house and it was great! If anything parking is tight but you can find a spot on the street no problem. The garage can definitely fit a car in there ! You can walk to the beach, bars, and food areas around! The views are amazing and it was a great time. The beds were comfortable and we had everything we needed! I would definitely recommend to others ! We had a great time! Thanks again!
I stayed here with 8 girls for a Bachelorette party weekend and it was perfect. The location and house could not have been better. All of us thought it was better than it looks in the pictures. I would go back!
We had so much fun. This house was perfect for 10 of us girls!
Unbelievable location. Only downfall is the house does not have air conditioning and air flow is almost non existent. Our average temperature in the house was 80 degrees throughout the day and night.
We're so glad the guest enjoyed the home's location. The owner is addressing the A/C situation and will be gathering price quotes after the summer season. Thank you.
GreAt location - easy walk to beach., restaurants, stores
Garage only holds 1 car so parking for big group is challenging in summer
We enjoyed our stay and staff very responsive to our needs
The setup of the home was exactly what we needed and fit all ten of us perfectly. The garage is NOT a two car garage, unless you drive two smart cars. We spent a lot of time moving vehicles from parking place to different parking place as there were different rules for each spot...not very relaxing. Plus we spent a ton of money paying for that parking. The email you get right before arrival gives the dimensions of three garage stalls, but the third one is not available. Such a hassle. The interior was clean, although the house was completely closed up when we arrived and super hot, not all the windows opened so we were quite warm (no AC) for the trip. There were many patios, but they were small and dirty, the doors were rusty, and there was only furniture on the bottom patio. It was old, rusted and the cushions were ripped and dirty as well. Sitting outside was not quite the experience we were hoping for. There were not enough towels and the laundry was in the garage without any detergent...so we made due. However the location was great, close to fun restaurants, bars, shops and such. Kids had a great time renting bikes and checking out the beach, which was super close. For the same money I've stayed at nicer homes in this general location (they were not available for the dates we needed) and would not come back. If you only have one car and don't plan to use the washer/dryer or outdoor patios the house itself was clean and nice.
The property has new beds and bedspreads, which is a great improvement. There are still some improvements to be made. We were told new carpet, which is desperately need, is on back order. The kitchen needs new skillets. They were so bad that we bought non-stick skillets to use, then took them home with us.
The carpet will be installed as soon we have open days this summer. New pots and pans are already in place. Thank you!
Space was huge and we easily accommodated our group. I would definitely stay here again.
From the reservation made months in advance until check out- couldn't be happier. Everything was wonderful. Great house! Loved it all, we had a great time!
Overall everything was great perfect location. House is in great condition and was very clean.
This house worked well for four couples.
The location of this property is great. It's a stones throw to the beach and there are more than a handful of really good dining spots within a few blocks. Great layout with three floors - 1st floor bed and bath, 2nd floor with bed/bath, kitchen, and living room, and third floor that had bath and plenty of room for my son, his wife and 3 kids. The only reason I didn't give the location a 5 was because it didn't have a clear view to the ocean - and frankly, you don't need one!
The proximity (one block from Mission beach and the walkway) was nice. The house was very worn, old comforters on the beds and worn furniture and carpet. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms was nice. The pull out couch should NOT count as a sleeping option. The housekeepers were meticulous, something I notice when renting... the bathrooms and sinks were sparkling. Parking was an absolute hassle, very limited on the street and the "double garage" would only fit one vehicle.
Great location. House had all the basics necessary for our family and we enjoyed our stay there
It's pretty much what all the other reviews say. I loved there were ceiling fans in each room. The ceiling fans were a make or brake for me since there was no AC
We had a girls trip with 10 of our girlfriends and the house was PERFECT!! The location was great and the size was very comfortable. We will definitely be back!!
I used to live a few blocks down so I was not surprised about how great the location was. I loved every bit of this property. Yes, it's a little kitschy and outdated but honestly, that added to its charm. There were multiple patios and we could hop back and forth from the beach to the house. It was everything we wanted and more. A note to renters: This is a beachside property. Sand rusts. Don't freak out if you see that this house is a little "used." That is the nature of these vacation homes. If you care about clean lines and all white linens, stay at a hotel. This is for a very relaxed group of people. Especially because there was an all night party next door... Would definitely come back though!!
We stayed for 3 night/4 days. it was a great spot and a great house. having a two car garage (if you have small cars, you could fit 3) was great too because if you haven't been to mission beach before, parking is hard to find. The house was plenty big for all of us. we had 12 adults staying and we all slept comfortably and had plenty of space to spread out.
I have seen some reviews on this house and people said the furniture was dated and needs to be updated or that the house was old and should be updated... Well when you are going to mission beach, you are going there for the ocean, not the furniture. Plus since it is a rental property and the price is on the "more affordable side," you cant expect top quality, fine furniture. If you wan that, go stay in a 5 star hotel resort and pay a lot more. This is Mission Beach. There will be sand on the floor after your first day there and that's part of staying on the beach. its all about location, location, location. it was a great location!
This was my 2nd time using Vacasa, first time at this property, and just like the first time, they were great and will use them again!
The location was prime! We loved being able to walk back and forth from the house to the beach. All of the shops around there are so cute and we loved walking up and down the beach and boardwalk.
We rented the property for a family trip which included two babies. The location was ideal and allowed easy back and forth to the beach. The house provided lots of space and plenty of bathrooms for 7 adults and 2 babies. The house really needs some thorough cleaning and some updates. Could really use a new grill and some nice patio seating would be great. The info said 6 beach chairs but there are only 2. Dishwasher was pretty bad. The negatives of this house were minor and with a little effort this could be an amazing rental. We loved the location!
Overall, we like the house. The only thing that i think the house needs to improve is replacing the pillows, mattresses, and blankets. They are pretty worn out.
We had great time at the big kahuna. Wa in a great spot, a few steps from the beach. Also was a great beach location as this far from the main places wasn't crowded at all unless you walked a 1/4 either way. Liquor store across the street(be aware they will over charge you late at nite) and nice bars in the area. Sasha's was steps from us but their service I incredibly bad. Be prepared to wait and pay too prices. Oysters were legit. Had a great time here and hope it's availble next time around.
With this home, you are paying for location. Place was perfect for 12, 3 floors all with outside space. Needs some updates, but overall we enjoyed our stay.
We had a very enjoyable family gathering at this house. There were 12 of us and we fit comfortably. The house is in a good, quiet location, close to the beach and the bay as well as places to rent bikes and boats. Plenty to do just walking around, but also lots of attractions to drive to, like the San Diego Zoo. I suggest you bring or rent car that is not too low or you will scrape bottom trying to get in garages.
With all the bedroom space, this house didn't feel too crowded even at max capacity (12 people). The house was clean and well-maintained, and the location is fantastic- the walk to the beach was only about 2 minutes. We were able to fit two cars into the garage, but it was really tight. It wasn't a problem, though, because street parking wasn't too hard to find. Would definitely rent again.
The house was in a perfect location (couple of feet from the beach and 10 min from popular breweries). Great updated kitchen and comfortable beds. We had a great time! Note: only one car will fit in the garage unless you have two mini coopers
We loved this home, it was an amazing location! We were able to walk back and forth from our favorite bars in PB to our favorite taco stand over in Belmont park! The sizing of the home was excellent, so much space for our party to be all together but also all have our privacy when needed. The Big Kahuna was great for a group of 12 adults and we would definitely consider renting this property again!
We had a great time. Close to the beach. Parking could be difficult, bring smaller vehicles. We had three large vehicles. City parking laws were very strict. The home was large and the entire family was just happy to be all together.
The family room furniture needs updated, not comfortable and not enough seating for the size of the house. One tv upstairs did not work and there isn't one in the master bedroom. Lacks towels so have to do laundry daily if you want to wash the sand off! Kitchen had plenty of silverware, plates, glasses but lacked a cookie sheet or decent pans and didn't even have a can opener. Basement bedroom bed is only a full size and very uncomfortable. On a good note though we loved the location, easy walk to beach or bay area.
Thank you for sharing your review. We appreciate your feedback and have shared it with our property manager so they can make sure that our guests are very comfortable in the future. We are so happy that you loved the location and how close the beach is!
We greatly enjoyed our stay. Vacasa placed us in an exceptional location in Pacific Beach between the between the beach and the bay. The place was immaculate, well furnished, and well maintained. We will definitely request this same rental in the future. Vacasa staff called and emailed to make sure we were comfortable and made us feel welcome. Overall a great winter vacation! Thank you!
Our annual family not on Christmas, Christmas celebration happened this year at the Big Kahuna, just off Mission Beach. The eleven of us, ranging in age from two to 65, had a great time, even though we hit the early January monsoons that raked the California beaches. We're okay with soggy weather and it was, but just part of the time. The majority of the days were great for wandering, walking, and just generally playing with grandkids. And the house worked for us.
Now, the house had some quirks, but we aren't too finicky, so we were happy. Our adult children loved it, even the couple relegated to the upstairs bedroom with the windows that took the major hit with the winds and rains we had several evenings. The windows rattle a bit and leaked some air. (Winds, ocean, windows, storms, all to be expected.)
With three floors of living space in play, the house works for multiple families. Multiple decks are nice as well. Being west of Mission Blvd. helped with the four ten and under folks in our crew. No traffic issues until you hit the boardwalk and then it was pedestrian or bike or skateboard, which you expect.
Some of the furnishing choices were a bit odd with a cozy table for about five in house for twelve, but sitting around the coffee table worked okay.
We'd come back here easily, but would hope a few items would be fixed first. Things like the exposed tack strip under the carpet that leads to the bathrooms in two places, and things like that. Maybe a dustpan to go with the broom. Not much dust in San Diego, but lots of sand, particularly by the beach so being able to pick it up would make some sense.
Again, nothing here that is a deal breaker, but I believe the owner and the rental company is shorting themselves by not taking this property to its potential. I get that it is a rental and gets abused on a daily basis, but sometimes abuse happens because folks believe you don't care or you would have fixed that little whatever.
Again, great place for families. If you are a room service, always use the valet, and send three out of five meals back because it doesn't meet your exacting demands, don't rent this place. If you can go with the flow, love the wind and rain as much as the sun and don't mind some sand between your toes, you'll enjoy this spot. The Big Kahuna is big and meets the needs of a big group, which can make vacations all the more fun.
I have rented this house before and was very happy. This time was no different. With the children getting older and beginning to spread throughout the Country we saw this as a great opportunity to get all of us together before the end of summer. There were no disappointments.
The location was good the fact that it is on the beach side of Mission which is a more busy road. Walking to the beach was an easy walk. Because the house is set back behind more houses you only see a little ocean view from the top balcony. Noise was definetly not an issue. Nice kitchen! Kitchen had everything we needed as far as plates, cups, silverware, bowls, pan, small appliances, was easy to prepare food in. The decor , furniture throughout house could use some updating, carpet was stained and by upstairs bathroom carpet was a little torn. Was great to have ceiling fans in all bedrooms but all the mattresses are pretty worn and also the foam padding on the mattresses. Comforters on beds could be updated. Nice that they were big beds. Our family really enjoyed our stay but next year we may want to find a house that has more view and openness to the ocean and sand and a bit more updated. The staff was always helpful when I had questions. Had a great time!
Great time, near Mission Beach. House was not on the beach but just steps away. We did not pay as much because of this. Definitely large enough for two families with lots of small and tween aged-kids. Was quiet at night. We were bothered by 6:30 AM construction. We asked them to stop and they did not do it again the next day.lots of really good restaurants in the area
