This was our second stay at Sugar Beach Resort—our first was in 2023 in a ground-level beachfront unit—and we absolutely loved this 3rd-floor corner unit. The views from the lanai were fantastic, and we even enjoyed some great whale watching. The unit itself was extremely well-equipped and very comfortable. We especially appreciated the beach chairs, umbrella, cooler, and other thoughtful extras that aren’t included in other vacation rentals. Unfortunately, our stay coincided with the Kona low storm that began on March 12th. When the rain started, the ground-mounted electrical panel for our building shorted and caught fire, leaving us without power for the day. Thankfully, a contractor arrived quickly and had it replaced by the end of the day. While walking around the resort, we noticed that many electrical panels and transformer enclosures appeared heavily corroded, so we hope there are plans in place to upgrade them to prevent similar issues in the future. On Friday, March 13th, the storm intensified significantly. We experienced another power outage, this time affecting much of North Kihei. The wind and rain were so severe that water began entering the unit from the lanai and other areas. Throughout everything, the local Vacasa representative, Janalyn, was extremely responsive—offering us the option to move during the first outage (which we initially declined), and later helping us relocate to another unit once the water intrusion became an issue. Power was finally restored on Sunday night, March 15th. We truly wish we could have spent our entire stay in unit 313, since we enjoyed it so much. We’re very sorry for the damage caused by the storm to this unit, the resort, and the broader Maui community. We’re confident Maui will recover, as it always does, and we would absolutely look to stay in this unit again on our next visit.
